An Honor Code Violation Made for BYU: Brandon Davies Girlfriend Allegedly Pregnant

The BYU Cougars will enter this month's NCAA tournament without one of their star players due to an honor code violation
Everybody loves a juicy scandal — except those involved in it — but you have to feel for Brandon Davies, despite the fact that I wrote yesterday about how I admire Brigham Young University for upholding its honor code. Davies, the star player of BYU’s No. 3 ranked men’s basketball squad, was dismissed from the team for violating school rules.
When the story broke, tongues were wagging with the conventional questions about what led to his expulsion: Did he cheat on a test, commit a felony, collect booster payments to play collegiate hoops?
Hardly. Instead, he violated school policy by having premarital sex with a woman — the latest rumor is she’s pregnant (yawn). So much for the juicy scandal.
Meanwhile, a Davies-less BYU team fell hard last night — and in its Provo, Utah, arena — to New Mexico. The final score: 82-64.
Davies is a man and he made a mistake; he didn’t commit a crime but he ran afoul of BYU’s rules. He knew the score when he enrolled at the Mormon university, and now he, and his team, is paying the price.
But what a price to pay. In an era where Charlie Sheen makes headlines whenever he breathes, the father of Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton admits to soliciting six-figure payouts from prospective universities, Davies’ fall from grace is because he had premarital sex.
Whatever the public outcry is, don’t expect BYU to cave in. The university has, so to speak, made its bed and will have to sleep in it.
For Davies, let’s hope he rebounds from breaching a draconian policy administered by the brain-trust at BYU.
Unlike those college players before with off-court troubles, Davies’ value in the eyes of NBA scouts and teams won’t diminish. But the allure of playing hoops at BYU might in the eyes of many Cougar recruits.
Do you feel bad for Brandon Davies?

Oddly, it’s actually better that this is public, because he has a chance to transfer to another school (after sitting out a year).
Without these details, people are inclined to think the worst. Potential coaches will be overjoyed that his worst transgression is pre-marital sex. “Wait, he had consentual sex with his girlfriend? He didn’t hit her or beat up someone else or get high with her? Great – let’s talk”.

Jessica commented on Mar 03 11 at 12:29 pmI totally feel bad for this guy.. even though he knew the rules coming in he is a teenager after all and sometimes they don’t think about that stuff until it’s to late. Who hasn’t made a mistake as a teen it just stinks that he can’t do the one thing he probably loves the most. I’m hoping the best for him and his GF.
Amanda commented on Mar 03 11 at 1:29 pmIf you choose to go to BYU, then you have to live by Mormon rules. It’s that simple. No one forces anyone to go there.
Angela commented on Mar 03 11 at 5:43 pmHaving been to BYU I figured it was likely something to do with sex. They probably would have been more willing to work with him had it been cheating or something else. The rest of the world has moved on but Mormons preach that sexual sin is second only to murder in God’s eyes and treat it as such. I don’t agree with their doctrine but I will say this. Every day students who are not sports stars get booted from BYU for the same thing and unlike Davies they don’t have other colleges beating down their doors to help them transfer. If the school had made an exception for him just because he was a star player then that would be even more reprehensible IMO.
yeahright commented on Mar 03 11 at 8:43 pmAmanda: I totally agree with you. He knew what he was getting into when he signed up.
I am not Mormon, I don’t agree with their code of conduct but I did go to a conservative Christian (Lutheran) college and I just want to mention that there are still people out there who believe premarital sex isn’t ok… and we’re not absolute weirdos. Sorry it’s anticlimactic (ha!) for you all, but it’s probably a pretty big deal around there.
