The sign that first told parents something was up.

When it comes to daycare, all parents know how hard it is to find the right one. But I read a story over the weekend that showed the flip side of that: namely how easy it is to find the wrong one.

If you don’t believe me, ask a handful of parents in Pittsburg. Because they found out that the daycare they had entrusted their children with was the subject of a recent police search. And the first sign that things were awry was a literal one taped to the door that read “Closed to to emergency,” but it just as easily could have read “shut down because of felony.”

Caroline and I send our little guys to daycare two times per week. We’re starting to think about next year and are unsure whether or not to send them three or five days per week next fall. What we’d really like to do is send them for four, but unfortunately, our daycare doesn’t offer a four-day program.

Sunday I realized just how lucky I am that scheduling is the biggest beef I have with our daycare after reading a Gawker post about a Pittsburg daycare that was recently the subject of an undercover drug bust. A successful undercover drug bust. According to Pittsburg’s WPXI, Reanell Booker, 50, who helped run R&B Childcare Services, was taken into custody after police uncovered $6,000 worth of crack cocaine, a bagful of sex toys and $4,000 in cash on the premises.

Booker faces drug charges and may also face child endangerment charges. Given that there was a large amount of crack and pornography on hand, I don’t see how she’ll avoid that one. Nor do I see how the facility could possibly ever reopen after such a finding.

As awful as the discovery is, I’m glad that it was made by authorities rather than by its enrollees. It’s horrifying to know that someone who is licensed with their state to run a daycare and to take care of children (as Booker is) could be capable of such felonious and negligent behavior.

So the next time you have a minor frustration with the daycare that takes care of your kids, remember one thing: at least your kids were never enrolled at R&B Childcare Services.
