James Franco Tweets The Oscars: Are You In Tuned With Technology?
Hey Mom and Dad, do you tweet?
More and more these days, if you’re not on Facebook and Twitter, you may be missing out on a whole lot. From playdates to parenting advice, moms use their social networks on a daily basis. The same holds true with the Academy Awards, believe it or not. With the show pushing the limits to gain a new, younger demographic, the show changed somewhat but not enough to hold a young person’s attention. It actually looks like some of the best stuff played out most on Twitter.
James Franco kept his phone with him and documented the Oscars real time while hosting the show. He also filmed video of Oscar morning when he woke up, posed for pics backstage, and shot video for his Twitter followers. He only made a Twitter account on February 18 and already has over 230,000 followers.
But it’s not only James who’s tweeted away…his Mom and Grandma did too! His mother Betsy and Grandma Mitz are part of the Mominees (mothers of the nominees) who were sending live updates.
“I am James Franco’s grandma Mitzie and one of the proud #oscars #mominees!” says Grandma Mitz’ tweet.
If you watched James closely, you saw how he often had his phone with him, even focusing more on the phone than the pre-Oscar interviews in certain cases.
The fact remains that if you are not up with technology, you will be left behind. While most moms I know are on Facebook, not as many have Twitter accounts. I also know some moms who dismiss technology and say they don’t have time for Facebook or Twitter, but if you plan to keep up with your kids (who seem to be born already technologically adept), it’s a must.
The world has changed and as much as some might try to dismiss the technology blitz as temporary or inconsequential, it looks like social networks, IMs, and Facebook friends are here to stay. Tweeting and texting is becoming crucial for today’s parents.
Just last week, my daughter texted my mother-in-law who is bravely facing learning to text her grandchildren back so she can keep up with them all. My father emails us and checks into the digital world daily, but I’m still trying to get my mother to embrace using a computer. She tried once, but then received a message that said she committed a “fatal error.” She thought she broke the computer and never used it again.
Most of our kids will not know what life was like before Facebook and Twitter, but they are a new means of communication that are rapidly growing.
What about you? Are you on Facebook? Twitter? How about your parents? Do you try to keep in touch with Grandma and Grandma using social networks? Did you like the live Oscar updates? Did you know about them?
