So you mean it's really only 5 am? Great.

Our entire family was sick this weekend. Well, except for my 9-year-old. Lucky for her, she was at her dad’s. Because all the rest of us did was sit around and hack our heads off on both Saturday and Sunday. The only nice thing about it was that everyone slept in yesterday. And that’s when it dawned on me.

Soon, even if we sleep in, the hour will be earlier than we think. For Daylight Savings Time 2011 is lurking in the not-so-distant future. And while its function of providing more light later into the day is a beneficial one, its side effects for those of us with young munchkins are anything but beneficial.

But regardless of what it does to your family’s schedule, Daylight Savings Time stops for no one. And this year, we spring ahead in a little less than two weeks. On Sunday, March 13, when you wake up at 6, your body will think its 5. That’s the bad news. The good news is that it will stay light an hour later.

But guess what? If you have young kids, even the good news isn’t that good! Especially if you enforce a strict bedtime, which is exactly what my wife and I do. I know it’s not for everyone, but for us to maintain any type of order, getting our kids down at an early hour is a must. So we put the triplets down at 7. Which means they wake up around 6 the next morning.

But on that morning of Sunday, March 13th? That wakeup time will really feel like 5. And that means we will have three little tyrants who are even grumpier than normal with which to contend. So, why not let them sleep in, you ask? Simple. Because then they won’t go down when bedtime rolls around.

Which is hard enough to accomplish with all that extra light that will be seeping in through their shutters!

However, once we adjust, we’ll thrilled with the new time. It’s getting adjusted that’s the hard part. At least we have two weeks to bone up for it.

I’m sick of the time change. It’s no longer useful. It’s just annoying.

I figure at this point (going on three solid weeks of less than four hours of sleep per night) it can’t hurt any…

I’m with Manjari. What say we split the difference and shift the whole thing a half an hour and stick with it?
