Scrabble Helper: Family Fun Or Mom-Only Obsession
Some people play Angry Birds. I play Scrabble. I play Words With Friends on my iPhone, Lexulous on Facebook and Scrabble on my dining room table. I’m not afraid to admit I kind of have a problem. A word-game related problem.
My problem is two-fold. There’s the obvious: should I really be scrambling letters instead of eggs when the kids are clamoring for breakfast? I play Scrabble all day long. It’s my guilty little pleasure. Because I am an enormous dork.
Then there’s the other problem: How will I find a bingo to defeat my girlfriend after her 60-point play?
I could use a cheat like the Scrabble Word Finder, widely lauded as the best one on the net. It lets you plug in your letters, the word you want to hang off it, and then gives you a long list of possible plays.
Which is cool, if you feel like letting the computer play the game for you. But what’s the fun in that? I think I’ll stick with the old-fashioned route: make the best move I can after crinkling my brow at the screen for a few minutes.
I started playing Scrabble with my mom when I was a kid, and I’ve always loved the game. I’m starting to teach my older daughter just as fast as she’s learning to read. Soon we’ll have a three generations deep tradition based on word puzzles.
