Peter Krause Brings Parenthood & Pathos to the Small Screen
Parenthood is hard. And while you are in the midst of it, you just make it happen. You live each day. But when you watch a condensed version of the trials and tribulations that a parent goes through, where days are smashed into an hour-long program, it could leave you in more of a tizzy than real life. Especially one dealing with specific and intense issues.
Parenthood, and especially the issues facing Adam Braverman – the role played by Peter Krause – seems particularly unnerving. The main issue Adam Braverman, father of two, faces on the show, beyond being constantly exasperated by his siblings and father, is his son Max’s struggle with Asperger’s Syndrome. Not only are there the intense battles and bitterness about his son’s condition, but he’s also having issues with his daughter’s boyfriend who he feels is infringing on their family time. Plus, the boyfriend (who also happens to be a recovering alcoholic) is better at basketball than he is.
I tried to watch the show on Tuesday evening, but I noticed my shoulders tensing up, my brow starting to furl, and I was in no mood for the perils, pain and pathos that comes with Parenthood – the televised version. And the acting, by the cast featuring Peter Krause, Lauren Graham, Craig T. Nelson, and Dax Shepard among the strong ensemble cast, just adds to the intensity. Some opt to embrace the drama and feel it can be cathartic. But others, we’d rather watch an old Scooby Doo while cuddling with the kids.
Do you embrace TV family dramas or do you avoid them?

e commented on Feb 23 11 at 3:33 pmI think this is the best show on TV right now! I love that when we’re watching it my wife and I often pause the Tivo, turn to one another and ask “what do you think? is that how you would have handled that?” This show has spurred many deep parental conversations between the two of us.

p.s. It’s “Aspergers” :-)
LogicalMama commented on Feb 23 11 at 5:59 pmFor the most part I like it, but I am tiring of the drama too. Adam Bravermen is a little too sanctimonious for me, a little too self-indulgent, they are!
Gretchen Powers commented on Feb 23 11 at 6:11 pmI love this particular drama and can’t wait to see next week’s.
Manjari commented on Feb 23 11 at 7:59 pmWe are just watching season 1 now, and we love it.
