80-Year-Old Iowan Speaks Out in Favor of Gay Marriage

At a pro-gay marriage event in Iowa.
19-year-old Zach Wahls spoke earlier this month at Iowa’s House of Representatives in support of gay marriage, giving his take on being raised by two moms. He closed his short, yet powerful speech by saying, “The sexual orientation of my parents has had zero effect on the content of my character.” (Obviously we all know what he meant, but one might argue that being raised by gay women has actually helped make Wahls the passionate and caring young man he is.)
In Iowa, there is a premium placed on one’s Iowan-ness. Wahls began his speech by asserting that he is a sixth generation Iowan, and today he is joined in the ranks of Iowans who support gay marriage by an 80-year-old third generation Iowan named Jean Argus, who wanted to tell the world – and Iowa lawmakers – how proud she is of her gay son and his husband. I dare you to watch her adorable YouTube address without crying.
In a related story, a flash mob appeared yesterday at Iowa’s Statehouse “to deliver a message of love on Valentine’s Day,” On Top Mag reports. They danced to “All You Need is Love” by The Beatles as a means of “trying to spread the message for love of everyone and in support of gay marriage here in Iowa.” The Iowa House of Representatives approved a bill two weeks ago seeking to repeal gay marriage. ”The bill is now headed to the Democratic-controlled Iowa Senate, where Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal has vowed to block it from coming to the floor for a vote,” LGBTQ Nation reports.
