Grammy Nominations 2011: Kid Friendly, Adults Only and One Wildcard
My wife and I are fired up about the Grammys. We’ll be tuning in for sure. We’re particularly excited to see the Avett Brothers and Mumford and Sons performing alongside the great Bob Dylan. Our 9-year-old daughter is pretty stoked about tonight, too. She wants to catch nearly all the acts. Little does she know, she’ll only be catching some of them. For while the 2011 Grammy-nominated performers are sure to deliver plenty of kid-friendly moments, they’re also sure to deliver some not-so kid friendly moments as well. And though I have no crystal ball, I have a hunch I know which will be which.
Oh. Except for one act that could go either way. Talk about a true wildcard…
Kid Friendly: One performance that’s sure to be kid friendly has a big-brother feel to it. For according to PopEater, that’s the role Justin Bieber has taken on to 12-year-old Jaden Smith this past week. Now, Bieber’s not exactly a veteran, nor is he particularly old, but he’s has, indeed, been around the block a time or two. As such, he’s taken Will and Jada’s son under his wing as the two spent the week preparing for their live performance. Usher will be sharing the stage with the young duo. Look for this one to be surprisingly good (regardless of your opinion of Bieber). Look for it to also be kid friendly.
Jennifer Hudson (love her), Yolanda Adams, Martina McBride, Florence Welch and Christina Aguilera will be paying homage to the great Aretha Franklin. This one will be okay for the kids, too. Assuming Christina remembers the lyrics, it should go off without a hitch. The five performers are a talented and classy assortment, to be certain, which is only appropriate seeing as how they will be tipping their cap to one of the most talented and classy ladies to ever pick up a microphone.
Adults Only: Okay, don’t get me wrong. I’ll be watching. But Alli won’t. When Eminem takes the stage, that is. But it’s not that I’m dying to see the controversial rapper, who tops all artists with 10 nominations. It’s because I’m dying to see the legend who will be performing with him — Dr. Dre. I’ve been a fan since his NWA days. That said, I just assume my daughter stick with Bieber.
And another act I’m dying to see is Lady Gaga. I’m a big fan. Plus, she potty trained my triplets. True story. But I’m not dying for my daughter to see her. Lady Gaga is many things. Rated G is not one of them.
Wildcard: Of all the acts, there’s one that could clearly go either way. It’s an unlikely trio to say the least. Wholesome, Hollywood A-lister Gweneth Paltrow and the Muppets, of all people(?), will be on the stage at the same time. Sounds like a family friendly act to be sure. Until you throw in one little fact. They’ll be performing with Grammy nominee Cee-Lo Green as they sing a song whose title is too profane to print on this fare cite. But it rhymes with New Truck. Wait, Truck New. It rhymes with Truck New.
Come to think of it, maybe that one’s no wildcard after all. Hard to imagine how they’ll pull that one off. But two things are for certain. I’ll be watching. And my daughter will not.
Will you and your family watch this year’s Grammys? What acts are you excited to see?

goddess commented on Feb 13 11 at 2:26 pmMust see Lady Gaga. But mostly want to see Soundgarden win Best Hard Rock Performance, and Megadeth win Best Metal Performance, though Iron Maiden would satisfy me as well. [throwing goat horns] Then want to see Broken Bells win Best Alternative Album
John Cave Osborne commented on Feb 13 11 at 2:30 pm@goddess — I LOVE Soundgarden. I used to see them all the time out and about when I lived in Seattle during the 90s. Even sat next to Chris Cornell once at the Crocodile Cafe. Great call by you! (throwing goat horns right back!)
goddess commented on Feb 13 11 at 6:12 pmI love his work with Audioslave, as well as his solo work. HUGE Cornell fan- best voice of the generation, IMHO.
John Cave Osborne commented on Feb 13 11 at 7:58 pmi love audioslave, too. though, admittedly, i’m only familiar w/ some of their bigger singles. i have Highway on my ipod in constant rotation. i like running to it for some reason. he has an incredibly powerful voice. and he’s an uncommonly beautiful man. few can go from iconic / legendary band to have such success w/ another band as Cornell did w/ ASlave. the only other person who comes to mind is Dave Grohl w/ Nirvana to Foo Fighters. awesome stuff, goddess. and you’ll get no argument from me when it comes to his possibly being the best voice of the generation.
Jake Wilson commented on Feb 13 11 at 10:55 pmOMG just saw Gweneth on the Grammys, what a HUGE embarrassment to music. I’m sorry, but she just cannot sing. She reminds me of my sister in the car with the radio turned all the way up to drown out her off-key signing.
Gwen, you’re a pretty OK actress and you should continue to focus on your acting and keep the singing to your your car…with the radio turned way up. My sister shouldn’t be on the Grammy’s and neither should you.
John Cave Osborne commented on Feb 13 11 at 11:07 pm@Jake Wilson — you’re not gonna get much of an argument from me. That performance certainly wasn’t very “country strong.” at all.
goddess commented on Feb 14 11 at 7:49 amStill loved Celo though. And the Eminem performance did not disappoint. Though I’m not a fan, he does maze me with his ability to command a room.
Did anyone else think Lady G ripped off Madonna’s “Express Yourself”?
John Cave Osborne commented on Feb 14 11 at 7:56 am@goddess — re: Express Yourself — i told caroline these exact words: “for someone singing about what an individual she is, this song sure does sound a lot like Express Yourself.” if you and i thought it, surely there are more. Arcade Fire blew me away.
Gretchen Powers commented on Feb 14 11 at 11:01 amI don’t see the appeal (freshness, innovation, etc.) of Lady Gaga…men were doing that drag queen shtick in the 70s…Muse was and is horrible…the whole thing seemed to be one overblown garish deal after the next…Norah Jones and two men singing Jolene was just weird…I guess Mick Jagger was alright. I didn’t mind Gwyneth’s voice, but she seemed really out of place. CeeLo has an amazing voice and I love his teeth…but, what’s with the muppets? None of this makes sense to me. I must be really old. And what’s with a 12 year old boy (or is he 17) running around in a leather biker suit? It all just gave me a huge headache. I like John Mayer’s new look…he looks like Johnny Depp…but the white tuxedo jackets have got to go.
Gretchen Powers commented on Feb 14 11 at 11:04 amShe is not my style, but I did like the way Miranda Lambert pulls off being not too skinny (if you know what I mean) and still looking good. And she has a nice, not overblown voice and stage presence…her song sounded pretty solid, too, though again, not my style. I’m glad Esperanza Splading won…makes me think someone that actually knows something about music may still be involved in choosing the winners…
John Cave Osborne commented on Feb 14 11 at 11:13 am@Gretchen Powers — I love Lady Gaga. I can’t help myself. But, like goddess, I did think that she sounded like Madonna last night. All the comparisons to Madonna are valid. I’ve always thought that. Still, I think she’s bringing something fresh to the table. And maybe, as you point out, there is a little Rocky Horror Pic Show element to what she does, but, hey, no one else is doing it. And no one else is showing up in a translucent egg to a major award show, either. You nailed Gwyneth. It’s like she doesn’t belong on stage, let alone on piano. I truly thought she was gonna fall. Muppets? WTF? Not into John Mayer. Total copycat look notwithstanding, he comes off so sanctimonious. Love Miranda. Like you, not her music, necessarily, but just the fact that she’s comfy in her skin. She’s got a good handle on what true beauty is. Loved your comments. Thanks for leaving them!
