Maksim Gelman Arrested In Manhattan After Brooklyn Killing Spree
Maksim Gelman, the 23-year-old Brooklyn man who went on a killing rampage early yesterday morning has been captured. He stabbed his stepfather early yesterday morning, and then continued to stab his ex-girlfriend and her mother to death yesterday afternoon. Then he carjacked and stabbed a man, ran over and killed an 80-year-old woman, and stabbed another man during the night. This morning, he was arrested on a Manhattan subway after stabbing yet another man on the train.
Sources say he had a history of violence with his stepfather but no clear cut answer as to what made this man snap has been determined. In a press conference on Saturday, New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said, “It’s so horrendous and bizarre. We have no reason that we can give you as to why he did this.”
Residents in my neighborhood are just thankful he has been caught because these killings happened just blocks from my home and my children’s school.
As the 30-hour-drama unfolded, Gelman skipped all across Brooklyn taking over cars and then hopping on the subway to escape the manhunt. Police in the neighborhood were canvassing a 150 block radius that included several schools.
In custody in a Manhattan police precinct, Gelman is now being linked to other crimes overnight, including stabbing a New York City cab driver and a couple in Queens. Gelman has reportedly been arrested at least 10 times for drug possession and robbery.
It’s one of those surreal things that you really never think about happening in a small, residential neighborhood. As reporters filled the streets and interviewed witnesses, so many just kept repeating “This is such a good neighborhood.”
I didn’t find out about this killing spree until all my kids were already home from school. I surely would have been doubly concerned if my oldest was still on her way home as she takes the bus that passes by many of the streets where the killing spree took place.
It’s amazing what a different outlook parents can instantly have when something like this happens. Free range be damned, we didn’t want to let our kids out of the house.
Luckily, he has been captured. Still, four innocent people have been killed and more suffer severe injuries in this day and a half killing rampage.

Shame to the Police Precinct #61 in Brooklyn!
Everything happened in the same area, which is in their responsibility, in the same long day.
