Anderson Cooper Attacked By Mubarak Supporters in Cairo (VIDEO)
Anderson Cooper and his crew were attacked and punched while trying to reach a neutral zone in Cairo.
The situation in Egypt is getting worse day-by-day and is slowly beginning to involve more Americans, specifically American journalists. CNN anchor Anderson Cooper and his crew were attacked by supporters of Hosni Mubarak in Cairo. It is reported that Cooper was punched in the head at least ten times.
The altercation occurred as pro-Mubarak supporters attacked protesters who were calling for the Egyptian president to step down. Cooper said that he had been trying to go to a neutral zone but still came under attack. The anchor says he and his crew were trying to make their way to a neutral zone between pro- and anti-Mubarak protesters. However, before they could go far, his crew was attacked by the pro-Mubarak camp.
Huffington Post reports that Cooper didn’t yet reach the neutral zone when they were assaulted:
“We never got that far,” he said. “We were set upon by pro-Mubarak supporters punching us in the head.” Cooper said that he and the crew tried to escape, but that the crowd only grew: “The crowd was throwing punches, kicks, trying to grab us,” he said. “Suddenly, a young man would come up, look at you, and punch you in the face.”
There have also been reports of journalists Katie Couric and Christiana Amanpour being chased and attacked by angry mobs.
My son saw the footage of Anderson Cooper being attacked on the news and just couldn’t understand why no one was protecting the streets and keeping order. He couldn’t believe that the cops wouldn’t arrest the people causing the trouble. So we began to talk about government, order, and protests. We discussed how lucky we are to be living in the United States, and we began what I’m sure will be many discussions to come about Egypt and world affairs.
