Toyota Recall 2011: Will It Affect Your Family?
Toyota is recalling 1.7 cars worldwide for safety problems, Reuters reports. The car company, once the untouchable top of their class, has been forced to do several major recalls over the past year due to safety problems.
The current recall is for a variety of issues, including faulty fuel pumps and connecting pipes. This is very different from the recall last year when cars had to be recalled due to unintended acceleration problems that caused dozens of fatal accidents. Yet it certainly doesn’t help Toyota’s efforts to restore their safety-conscious image.
Toyota’s sales fell last year, probably at least partly in response to the new safety concerns. They’re still the global top-selling automaker, but General Motors is hot on their heels.
This recall focuses on some Lexus models and Toyota models sold mainly overseas.
The Lexus models are IS250. About 152,000 in the U.S. are affected. Reuters has these details on the rest of the recall:
The models affected by the fuel pump issue include the Noah minivan and other models sold in Japan as well as 141,000 Avensis units sold overseas. That is Toyota’s biggest recall in six years and its second-biggest ever for a single defect, said Toyota spokeswoman Shiori Hashimoto.
Does your family have a recalled Toyota? Every time I see one of these big safety issues crop up with Toyota, I love my Mazda5 more and more.
For years, Toyota was the basic family car. Everyone in my family drove Toyotas. So did most of my mom friends. When I bought a Mazda, some of them looked at me funny, like I’d gone to the dark side. But I’ve loved every second of having this cute little car. Not that Mazdas are immune to safety recalls either, but Toyota had this image of perfection that has been tarnished. This new recall isn’t making things better.
