Eat this, save a cow.

A post from Babble Deputy Editor Jack Murnighan:

Taco Bell meat is now proving not to be entirely meat, and we have a problem with that? Please, let’s stop being naive. When we take the soccer team for burritos advertised as containing a half-pound of ground meat each (and their website claims it’s actually beef) is $1.99, you can’t expect filet mignon.

Taco Bell is what fast food generally is: cheap, convenient, and made of crap. It’s cheap only because it’s crap, and it’s part of the reason it’s fast. If you were under the illusion that you were getting free-range Bison in your gordita, you should see how far $1.99 takes you at Whole Foods.

Plus, don’t many of us pay extra to feed our kids (or ourselves) “fakin” bacon, tofu pups, and other soy substitutes for meat? Are we really upset that Taco Bell is killing fewer animals but still delivering a meaty experience? Save a cow and have it still taste good? Sign me up.

Furthermore, I’d love to see the relative health value of regular ground beef and their doctored version; I suspect the latter might be better on me and my boys’ arteries.

As long as the corporations like Taco Bell don’t actively mislead the consumer, then their various tricks to lower prices are okay by me (and should be okay by anyone who’s pleased to be able to spend $1 on a double cheeseburger). McDonald’s has long called their pancakes “hot cakes,” as they never touch a pan. If you want “real” pancakes you’d better take the family elsewhere.

Fast food is obviously an opt-in affair. If any part of the massively unsavory business distresses you, don’t eat it. But if you do, don’t deceive yourself into thinking that you’re eating food that follows all other food rules. Just as the prices at drive-thru places can be hard to believe, so should be the idea that you’re getting a burger, a chicken sandwich, or a milkshake.

AMEN!

All these people with their panties in a bunch blow my mind. What did they THINK they were buying? The one thing about this entire situation is that I actually KNOW what all of the ingredients in their “taco meat filling” are! It might not be 100% beef, but it does look to be 100% natural in that regard.
