The Dark Knight Rises, But the Sun Has Set on a Batman Appropriate for Kids

Christian Bale will reprise his role as Batman in The Dark Knight Rises.
Warner Bros. announced today that the lovely and talented Anne Hathaway will play Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman in the new Batman flick, “The Dark Knight Rises,” to be released in 2012. In the film, Batman will battle Bane, to be played by Tom Hardy. As PopCrunch noted earlier, “Bane is an escaped prisoner who became abnormally strong after being pumped full of drugs. He’s also known as “the man who broke the Bat” after he cracking Batman’s spinal cord in the DC comic book stories.”
Which brings me to the parenting aspect of this post: comic books have always been full of violence, but that violence was once depicted in a much more kid-friendly way. As my mother said when she heard the casting news, “The only Batman that was good for kids was Adam West. I loved him.” How could you resist? That grey unitard, the giant POW! symbols every time he threw a punch? The Batman of the 60′s was as innocent as he could be.
I was a teenager when the Batman films first came out, and I enjoyed all of them, even as they got darker and darker. Sure, Nicholson’s Joker was creepy, but he seems downright cheery compared to Heath Ledger’s incarnation. I liked “Batman Begins,” but I haven’t been able to watch “The Dark Knight” yet, because I’m afraid it’ll be too intense for me. I wonder what “The Dark Knight” would be like if it were more like the Adam West television series. Thanks to the folks at College Humor, now I know. You should check out their hilarious video The Dark Knight: 1960s Version, featuring my friend Trevor Williams as Robin. And if you like Batman humor, check this amazing song by my friend Mark Douglas, The Dark Knight is Confused.

Boring, badly written, indifferently acted and alltogether useless as a piece of art or entertainment?
