Two Students Injured During Shooting at Gardena High School

Two students pose outside of Gardena High School, where a shooting took place this afternoon.
An unidentified 18-year-old has been arrested as the result of an accidental shooting this afternoon at Gardena High School outside of Los Angeles. Two 15-year-old students were wounded in the shooting, one male and one female. The female student was shot in the head and is in critical condition at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. The male student was hit in the neck and is in stable condition. The male victim was struck with the same bullet that struck the female victim’s head, according to Hospital Chief Medical Officer Gail Anderson.
The shooting took place at 1:30 pm EST this afternoon after the 18-year-old student “brought a gun in a backpack to Gardena High School… and it reportedly went off by mistake when he dropped the bag on a desk,” The Daily Mail reports. The weapon, a 9mm Beretta semiautomatic handgun, was found after the incident by a campus aide. According to The L.A. Times, “When the gun discharged, the student bolted from the room and ran to an adjacent classroom.” The gunman told Deputy Police Chief Patrick Gannon he was sorry the gun discharged.
The Daily Mail reports that “a teacher is being credited with talking to the student inside a classroom and persuading him to cooperate with police.” Police are investigating how the student was able to bring a gun into the school, despite the use of metal detectors.
