MLK Day, Obama Style
Today is the day we set aside to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., one of the greatest Americans of all time. And while many have reflected upon King’s never-ending quest for justice and equality on behalf of all African Americans, President Obama correctly pointed out another trait for which King is known. In fact, the Obama’s MLK Day activities embodied that attribute.
The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the Obamas spent the national holiday at Stuart Hobson Middle School on Capitol Hill, where the first family participated in an ongoing painting project. He and first lady Michelle Obama were among several volunteers who painted “bright red apple characters on pillars in the lunchroom to encourage healthier eating.” Daughters Malia and Sasha sat at a nearby table working on another painting project.
Obama noted that in addition to seeking justice and equality, King’s legacy was also about service. The President urged Americans to get out in their communities and give back, emphasizing that such a gesture would have an even deeper meaning in wake of the Arizona tragedy.
“After a painful week where so many of us were focused on tragedy, it’s good for us to remind ourselves of what this country is all about,” he told reporters. “This kind of service project is what’s best in us.”
It’s a special day for our nation’s first family in more ways than one. Not only is it a day to honor the great Dr. Martin Luther King by giving back, but it’s also Michele Obama’s 47th birthday. As such, volunteers and others who were at the school sang Stevie Wonder’s version of Happy Birthday to the birthday girl.
Wonder had originally written that version to honor…Dr. Martin Luther King.
If that’s not full circle, I don’t know what is. How did you and your family spend MLK Day?
