New zodiac sign dates change many of our sun signs

Remember a few weeks ago when we talked about hand-picking your baby’s sign? Some parents have gone to the extreme of scheduling C-sections to get the zodiac sign they wanted for their little one.

Turns out, we were doing it wrong. Most of us have been going by the wrong zodiac sign our whole lives, due to a mistake in the zodiac charts. If you’re like me and had your child’s astrological chart done in detail and framed after her birth, you might feel a bit foolish right now.

The zodiac problems are due to long-overlooked subtle shifts in planetary orbits and other things in space. I can’t pretend to know all about it. Happily, Paul Kunkle of the Minnesota Planetarium Society has this one covered. Here’s his corrected zodiac dates, in all their original Babylonian glory.

Capricorn: Jan. 20-Feb. 16.
Aquarius: Feb. 16-March 11.
Pisces: March 11-April 18.
Aries: April 18-May 13.
Taurus: May 13-June 21.
Gemini: June 21-July 20.
Cancer: July 20-Aug. 10.
Leo: Aug. 10-Sept. 16.
Virgo: Sept. 16-Oct. 30.
Libra: Oct. 30-Nov. 23.
Scorpio: Nov. 23-29.
Ophiuchus:* Nov. 29-Dec. 17.
Sagittarius: Dec. 17-Jan. 20.

* Discarded by the Babylonians because they wanted 12 signs per year.

This new chart makes me solidly a Cancer, instead of right on the cusp between Cancer and Leo. Fine. I always suspected as much. It pushes my mother and my oldest daughter from Gemini into Taurus, though, and that I just can’t swallow. Clearly, they are both Geminis, not earthy Tauruses. Or maybe, just maybe, this astrology thing is only what we make of it. Like any symbol system, its meaning comes out of how we use it, not really how the planets spin in the skies.

Still, symbols have power when we believe in them, just like placebo pills can heal people. I wonder if my mom and my daughter will become more grounded once they find out they’re secretly Tauruses. The new zodiac dates could give us all a playful moment to revisit personality traits we thought were entrenched in ourselves or our children. Your little Ares doesn’t have to be stubborn just because she was born that way. Surprise! She probably wasn’t.

This just proves that anything can change. Even the stars in the sky.

What if you find yourself an Ophiuchus? What are you supposed to do with *that*?

Seonaid commented on Jan 13 11 at 11:03 am

Ha. Gemini to Taurus… somehow I don’t accept that. Probably because I’m stubborn. OOOOOOOH SHINY! :: runs away ::

Casi commented on Jan 13 11 at 11:05 am

Kinda like there’s no way I can rationalize the whole Aries to Pisces concept (and I take this with a huge grain of salt anyways AND use it mainly for amusement). And seriously, what do you do with the Ophiuchus. What IS an Ophiuchus?

PlumbLucky commented on Jan 13 11 at 12:08 pm

I refuse to accept being moved from Gemini to Taurus either. Those planets should go back where they belong.

Moved from Gemini to Taurus is not cool!!

One of my astrology books mentions this shift, (bear with me, I owned the book about 15 years ago), but basically made it out to be that even though the dates have shifted, our ideas of which traits are associated with which signs have also shifted.

I refuse to accept that I am now a Gemini….I LIKE being a cancer. We are closed in people who are hard on the outside but with a soft mushy inside. *sigh*. So does this mean that when I read my horoscope (every now and a great while when I actually do for the heck of it) I have to read the gemini now? I don’t like this new study…I’m going to ignore it. :)

Meet the new BS. Same as the old BS.

bob commented on Jan 13 11 at 2:33 pm

A whole slew of my friends’ signs just changed from Libra to Virgo. Ew. And mine changed to..it makes no sense. Like everyone else said, what IS Ophiuchus?

Holly commented on Jan 13 11 at 3:00 pm

Well this puts a crimp in my day ! I do charts for friends I have to relearn everything I was taught ?? Now that is crappy!

Jacqueline Hayes commented on Jan 13 11 at 3:20 pm

So apparently I have now become a Taurus from a Gemini…which doesn’t match me at all, nor do the shifts that my parents have become.

What concerns me more than that, however, is that Scorpio only exists for 1 week now…is this Kunkle fellow trying to remove the Scorpio sign or something?

S commented on Jan 13 11 at 7:20 pm

I liked being a scorpio now I’m a libra. I want to be a scorpio. I so don’t like this change.

christina commented on Jan 13 11 at 11:16 pm

I cant handle this sign change my son is now that opchiurus ugh is that how u spell it

Virginia M commented on Jan 13 11 at 11:16 pm

This is incorrect information as Western Astrology is not based off of actual astronomy but on geo-centric fixed positions based on seasons. These do not change or vary. However Vedic or Indian Astrology uses this system and the sideral charts. So if you are reading from Western Astrology readings please continue to use the old system and dates which are entirely correct. If you follow the eastern tradition you already know about these dates anyways and this whole article is a bunch of nothing.

Well I read that the new sign are only for after 2009 you don’t change, If you was befor 2009.

Ginny commented on Jan 14 11 at 3:25 am

Can someone explain how scorpio zodiac is limited to 5 days…

adam commented on Jan 14 11 at 6:10 am

I too am a new taurus from gemini. i don’t like it one bit. it’s obvious that I’m a gemini – to my very CORE I am a Gemini, and in no way am I a taurus. I’m flighty, not grounded. I hate being outside in the nature and the dirt. I’ve always been the opposite of earth signs – literally, because I’ve always been an air sign. XD

this sucks. oh, and my friends and I can’t pronounce the new name, so we’re calling it “Oprah” How quaint =D

mikkibug commented on Jan 14 11 at 9:08 am

alex commented on Jan 14 11 at 4:38 pm

ok well im a Sagittarius through and through how do i just become this messed up named one that noone seems to know anything about that is just madness. lol im not a huge believer in many things but you cant change this not for me anyway! good luck trying to get people to follow this trend this is such a joke! non of the new stuff makes any sense and if your personality matches best the old i would stick to it because for me there are too many people that totally suit there so called old signs. So im my conclusion November 22 to December 21 is still Sagittarius!!!

Amanda commented on Jan 14 11 at 6:20 pm
