Is There School Tomorrow? Not Around Here
I’m curled up cozy at home with a cup of cocoa and a movie. The kids went to bed with visions of a snow day dancing in their heads. Both their schools are already closed for the snow emergency.
Now all we need is some snow.
I remember as a kid waking up to a day turned fresh and white with snow, and eagerly watching the TV to find out if school was closed or not. Now, school districts call snow days before the snow even starts falling.
I know weather tracking has gotten better, and we’re more sure when a big storm is coming. But really people: it is not even snowing yet. Not only is school cancelled, the evening Diverse Families Potluck and the preschool board meeting have been cancelled. More than 24 hours in advance.
It’s not that I’m all broken up about missing the board meeting. I’m just worried we’ve gone soft.
Of course it’s safer and more efficient to cancel school in an orderly manner. I’m sure it cuts down on accidents, and I know it saves time, money and chaos. It’s the forward march of progress. A better system than the haphazard one I grew up with.
But one that makes a snow day a little less like Christmas morning. Last year we shut down the whole city for a blizzard that never materialized. The first flake of this one hasn’t fallen yet. No matter how good the weather predictions have gotten, I won’t believe it till I see it. Which I hope to do early tomorrow morning. Maybe when we wake up, the world will be magically covered in white, and we’ll spend the day drinking cocoa and building snowmen, singing Winter Wonderland.
How will you be spending your snow day? There’s snow on the ground in 49 out of 50 states now. We’ll have a whole lot of company on our snow day tomorrow.

I actually thought that they wouldn’t be as soft as last year, after all the snow we had last year. In my area it was close to 8 feet in less than a week. 6-8 inches is nothing. I really thought that the most we were looking at was a delayed opening.
oh, well, at least we can be lazy in the morning.
