Elizabeth Edwards Dies, Will Be Remembered
As people start to pay their respects and offer up their memories of Elizabeth Edwards, who just succumbed to the cancer she publicly battled for years, many of her virtues will be praised: her courage. Her grace under pressure. Her remarkable poise in the face of her husband’s affair. Her openness about her illness. Her wonderful way of being with her kids.
Perhaps her greatest legacy, though, will be her advocacy of universal healthcare.
One tweet, from Roger Ebert, really stood out to me:
Thank u Elizabeth Edwards- & on the day we achieve universal healthcare 4 all Americans, u will b there, & we will thank u again
Edwards was a strong advocate for her husband’s universal healthcare proposals during his two presidential campaigns. She went on to become a health care advocate in her own right, tirelessly attending events in Washington and elsewhere to talk about the plight of those who cannot afford health care in this country. She’s a hero to many for her work.

Jackie Larson-knott commented on Dec 07 10 at 10:43 pmComments As a 4 year breast cancer survivor, I have read Elizabeth’s books and prayed that she would somehow survive even after she was diagnosed as stage 4. When someone else dies from the same disease that you have, you realize how fragile life can be. but Elizabeth was anything but fragile. She always had a positive outlook, and kept hope alive. She died with dignity and will always be remembered for her strength and wisdom. My heart goes out to her children and her siblings. Today at least five times, I have read her last Facebook message. I am going to try and live out my life according to her mantra. Rest in peace, Elizabeth and thanks you for your courage.
