The HCG Diet: Urine Injections Make You Skinny?
Most mamas are familiar with HCG. It’s the human growth hormone that shows up in your urine as soon as you get knocked up, the magic chemical that turns your pregnancy test positive when you pee on it.
Some people think that pregnant pee is good for something else. They’re using injections of HCG aka pregnant lady pee as a weight loss regimen. One shot a day supposedly cures your weight woes for good.
Before I get into the scientific problems with this, not to mention the safety issues, let me just say: having HCG in my urine, and flowing through my bloodstream, did NOT make me magically lose weight. It made me vomit like anything and turn up my nose at most foods, and I still gained 60 pounds with each pregnancy.
Have the proponents of this diet ever seen a pregnant woman? Healthy moms-to-be are not at their skinniest.
So the science: there’s no evidence that HCG helps people lose weight. The claim is that it tricks your body into thinking you’re pregnant, thus speeding up your metabolism and melting off pounds. You know what else tricks your body into thinking you’re pregnant? The Pill. And as anyone who’s taken it can attest, it makes you gain weight. Just like being pregnant does.
What might be at work for the people who swear by this gross weight loss supplement is a placebo effect. It’s an injection. With a huge ream of instructions. It costs a lot of money. There’s a lot of psychological weight to believing it will work. Placebos are powerful stuff, and they could prompt people to drop excess pounds.
Before you plunk down a pile of cash, you may want to consider a cheaper, safer one. I probably don’t need to tell you that injecting a stranger’s body fluids into your body is dangerous. Urine can carry pathogens and toxins that you don’t want in your body.
Simple sugar pills also make perfectly effective placebos, if you believe in them. They have the added advantage of not being made of pee.

lisa commented on Dec 03 10 at 6:45 amMy understanding is that it’s the pregnancy hormone found in women’s pee they’re injecting and not actual pregnant woman’s pee. No matter, it’s still a scary diet. A family member wants to go on this “diet.” I did a little looking into it, and it’s very scary. First off, if you google on this you get a ton of websites selling the stuff. It’s a bit difficult for people to search for some relevant data. When you do find information, it’s pretty bleak. First, you have to follow a 500 calorie a day diet. Yeah, I think I’d lose weight on 500 calories a day but what happens when you go off the diet? Chances are you’re going to balloon back up with a vengeance. This is the problem with crash diets. The other really misleading thing about this diet is that it is touted as a “medical” diet that is supposed to be administered by Drs. I think that misleads a ton of people. There are a lot of quacks out there. Sad but true. The thing is, if it seems to good to be true it most likely is. If this were such the wonder diet, why do we have such an obesity problem in this country??

But the theory isn’t that the hormone makes you lose weight on its own — the theory is that it’ll keep your metabolism from dropping through the floor while you’re on a starvation diet. (The advertisers also make all sorts of other crazy claims, like that it’ll suppress your appetite so you won’t mind being on a starvation diet. Riiiight, ’cause pregnancy SO doesn’t make you hungry.)

Just like I don’t trust the adkins diet (can we say gallbladder disease? and the man who created the diet died from his own diet). I really don’t trust any fad diet. It is all really simple, and doctors have said it over and over, “A healthy diet and exercise” its pretty basic and straight forward. Its not easy to stick to something like that (trust me I know, I’m a chocolate fiend), but it is basic. And I think any fad diet is something to be wary of.
LolaLane commented on Dec 03 10 at 2:18 pmThis diet is not scary, not a hoax. I hate explaining and re-explaining it to skeptics. I was a skeptic too but have managed to somehow lose 25.4lbs of FAT (not muscle as would happen with a true starvation diet of 500 calories a day). The article on Gawker really bugged me because of how incredibly unresearched and sensationalist it came across. I take an oral homeopathic version of HCG, not the injections discussed. And anyway, being obese for my entire life, I would gladly drink actual urine if it made me drop fat as quickly as HCG (NOT related to urine)actually does.
LolaLane commented on Dec 03 10 at 2:21 pmI have also not regained any of the weight lost from the 1st cycle. The idea is that your metabolism is “re-set” during the fat loss cycle. And no, you don’t starve or feel hungry because the nature of the HCG hormone causes your body to mobilize stored fat and use it for energy – 2500 to 3000 calories a day in fact. Your body uses it’s own fat and I’ve got a lot to use.

ALittleShort: true story – I was working out 5 days a week and only eating 1500 calories a day. I lost some weight but it was nowhere near as significant as the results I’m seeing now. I gained muscle but couldn’t seem to lose fat, so I just looked bulkier, lovely. Some people’s metabolism is so screwed up from horrific diet choices (guilty!) that their body can’t seem to get rid of stored fat – which is where I felt I was. Incredibly frustrating.

In any case, ALittleShort is right. The best way to lose weight is to eat healthy and exercise.
Sarah commented on Dec 06 10 at 1:32 pmThis diet totally works. Its not pee, they take the hormone out of the pee. My husband lost 50 lbs and I lost 30 doing this diet. It doesn’t make you sick or want to eat. Quite the opposite – I felt great and wasn’t hungry!
Kelley commented on Dec 06 10 at 10:30 pmI actually tried this diet after having my first child and it really did help a lot! I had gone 5 months without weight loss before I started it and within 2 months, I lost about 20lbs. Of course, I was working out daily, drinking a lot of water and following a high protein, low carb diet to jumpstart my weight loss. I took the injections, in the stomach 2-3 times a week. I really think these are what helped me lose all the pregnancy weight, because now 6 months after my 2nd child, I’m still having trouble losing more than 15lbs without it.
