What's Your Baby's Name?

The name parents choose for their baby says a lot about their personality and interests, according to my fellow Strollerderby blogger Sandy MapleIf that’s the case, then we’re clearly a TV-obsessed nation.

BabyCenter recently published its list of Top 100 Baby Names for 2010, and it’s clear that pop culture has influenced some new parents’ choices of names.

For instance, “Glee”-inspired names such as Finn and Quinn are gaining in popularity, as is Betty from “Mad Men” (but not Don) and Tiana from “The Princess and the Frog.” Will Rapunzel catch on next year?

Winter Olympics idols’ names have made the list, including Bode, Shaun and Apollo. And Sarah Palin’s girls’ names Bristol, Willow and Piper have all gained in popularity too.

BabyCenter’s survey found that 36 percent of mothers said they were inspired by famous people or characters when naming their baby.

Celebrities are our royalty and consciously or unconsciously, parents want a bit of that shine to rub off on their kids,” BabyCenter Editor-in-Chief Linda Murray told NBC News’ “Today.”

Here are BabyCenter’s baby name rankings for 2010:

Top 10 girls’ names

  1. Sophia
  2. Isabella
  3. Olivia
  4. Emma
  5. Chloe
  6. Ava
  7. Lily
  8. Madison
  9. Addison
  10. Abigail

Top 10 boys’ names

  1. Aiden
  2. Jacob
  3. Jackson
  4. Ethan
  5. Jayden
  6. Noah
  7. Logan
  8. Caden
  9. Lucas
  10. Liam

For 2011, they predict that Isla and Adalyn will be popular for girls and Bentley and Kellan for boys. I recently wrote about Nameberry’s predictions for baby names in 2011.

Did pop culture inspire your baby name choice? What names do you think will be popular in 2011?

I am a bit weary of names like Aiden, JaYden, Kiarah, Isabella, Bella, Emma, etc… Seriously, how many Aiden’s do we need in the world? It is akin to Jennifer or Michael in my time. Is it that hard to pick a name that is NOT in the top ten? Ughhh.

Please. Please. Please. Stop using different fonts and sizes for your writing. Make your writing the emphasis, not making your point with different fonts or changing the size of your font. Web – etiquette 101.

Darla, that commenter didn’t change the size of her font. There is only one font that is used for comments and posters have no control over it. And the fact that she chose to capitalize a word for emphasis is NOT any kind of violation of “web etiquette” — except maybe in your imagination.
