Thanksgiving Recipes: I Haven’t Got a Clue
This is the time of year I feel especially undomesticated. While other moms brag about their out-of-this-world cornbread stuffing or green bean casserole, I smile weakly and change the subject.
Until fairly recently, the only thing I knew how to make for dinner was reservations (or a phone call to the local pizza place). It’s taken me years to discover the the simple pleasures of meal planning and preparation, as well as the satisfaction that comes from nourishing friends and family.
But, even though I now know the difference between a whisk and a spatula, I’ve still got a lot to learn.
While my husband finds it relaxing spending time in the kitchen, being in the kitchen stresses me out. Therefore, he is usually in charge of planning and preparing the Thanksgiving meal and all I do is show up, eat, and clean up.
Last year I decided to pitch in a bit — I was proud of myself for making my first-ever apple pie (I even made the crust from scratch!). It was a big hit and I plan to make it again this year. In fact, it will be an apple pie factory at our place this week since I’m also making a pie for Ruby’s class celebration.
I plan to spend the day before Thanksgiving baking, so my husband can have the kitchen to himself for the big event. Perhaps one day I’ll feel confident enough in the kitchen to take on Thanksgiving dinner myself, but for now, I’ll just do my best with the pie and enjoy the fact that my husband is happy to cook.
My husband is busy prepping for Thanksgiving today and has found some good Thanksgiving recipes, including a sweet potato casserole recipe and a green bean casserole recipe. Me? I’m busy blogging.
If you need some guidance, check out Family Kitchen for more Thanksgiving recipes (including Thanksgiving fruit salad) as well as info about how to brine a turkey and Turkey Hotlines. And these Thanksgiving games and worksheets will help to keep your kids occupied while you’re busy in the kitchen.
Are you preparing Thanksgiving dinner or does the whole family pitch in?

Marilyn commented on Nov 20 10 at 5:49 pmGood luck with the pie, Paula. I have always used chopped spinach (frozen, thawed is fine) INSTEAD of the green beans in the famous green bean casserole. It’s yummy and we prefer it to the beans. This year we’re going to a friend’s house for dinner. I think I’ll bake the layered cookies that we love and bring them.

Linda, the original one commented on Nov 22 10 at 1:54 amI don’t know who decided that that awful green bean casserole was some kind of treat. Blech. I think the thing about a traditional thanksgiving meal is that it’s simple enough that almost anyone can prepare it. Evene my husband, who is no cook, made it the eyar I was pregnant with our first child and I was sick with a cold.

paulabernstein commented on Nov 22 10 at 10:27 amMichelle, you cracked me up! Who needs the whole family when you’ve got Whole Foods?!
Manjari commented on Nov 22 10 at 11:26 amI don’t like green bean casserole, so I make sauteed (fresh) green beans with dried cranberries.
michelle commented on Nov 22 10 at 2:12 pmDamn straight, Paula! Full meal for 6-8: $99 plus tax. Me not slaving in the kitchen: priceless.
Heather commented on Nov 24 10 at 1:59 amI am like you, cooking and me don’t really mix that well. I usually contribute a dessert or something for Thanksgiving. However, I have been learning a lot through using E-Mealz & I love that they take all the thinking out of dinner time for me. Maybe it can help you out too. :)
