Congratulations!! My 4 mth old surprise (after my husband's vasectomy) is the most beautiful and happiest baby boy I could have imagined. While I long for the days when I can sleep again, I wouldn't have changed my "oops" for the world.

Kristen — good call! All the way around. We just found out that there's only one this time (thank goodness). Good luck!

After reading this, I called and tried to make an appointment to get my tubes tied. I already have five (ages 11years to 5months) and my fear has always been multiples... I don't want to get complacent thinking that it took years of fertility treatments to get #5, so I'm sure I'd never get pregnant with #6. Too bad my OB clinic is too busy to pick up the phone...

@michelle — Sorry it took me a while to get to you. I wonder if you'll be checking? I usually try to respond to most of the comments left, especially thoughtful ones that ask specific questions like yours did. I wrote a post on my personal blog that was similar to this one, so I get the two confused. But I thought this one made mention of the fact that this baby was one that we thought was impossible were it not for fertility. I could easily be wrong, and even if I'm not, the reference was a fleeting one which would have been easy to miss.

Regardless of what we thought was "possible," the responsible thing for a couple who did not want any more children would have been to use birth control or get a vasectomy/ligation. As I always said, "If we ever do get pregnant again, it's not like that'd be the worst thing in the world." So, on some levels, I think we were actually A-OK with the concept. I plan to go more into detail on that at my personal blog if you'd ever like to come check me out there. it's my full name dot com.

Michelle, thanks for your comment!

Congratulations and lovely post. But I'm curious about something that you did not address in your post. If neither of you wanted more children, why didn't you use birth control, or why didn't one of you get a vasectomy/ligation? Or did you, and it failed? Or did you think that you couldn't possibly have any more due to age/fertility? What happened? I ask because we were just having this discussion w/ our friends who just had their second child at age 43 (the mom), after 4 rounds of IVF. They consider their family complete at this point, but they figure that there's no possible way they can ever conceive again naturally, so they don't bother using anything. Later my dh and I said to each other: aaand welcome baby #3.

@Triplemom — are you a triplet mom, too? And let's keep it to cheers-ing baby #5. okay? HA!
@Angela Lister — It is SO nice to see you visit me here. Thank you so much. You're awesome.

@KellyK — oh my goodness. I'm gonna lobby hard for that.
@By Here — Thank you so much for quoting that Psalm. Simply beautiful.
@ClaireR — A friend of Katie's is a friend of mine. Thank you! Our hearts are, indeed, full.
@JBoogie — As I've said before, you may have the best handle of all time. Now, please, but down the tequila and slowly walk away from the table. LOL.
@Mistress_Scorpio — You have no idea how great it is to hear words from someone like you who has been in our exact shoes. We know it'll be great. But hearing people who've been there assuring us? It's quite a gift. Thank you for that!
@Black Sheep — thank you!
