Baby Names Fit for a Prince or Princess

I realize that Prince William and Kate Middleton just announced their engagement, but Royal-watchers can’t help but wonder when they’ll start working on producing royal offspring.

For those of us who are obsessed with baby names, it’s hard not to wonder what Prince William and Princess Kate will name a future child. They certainly might want to name a baby in memory of the late Princess Diana, but they could also choose from a long list of classic royal names.

Nameberry surveyed the history of royal names in Britain and found that they “go far beyond the expected Elizabeths and Williams.”

With that in mind, here are my Top Ten Baby Names for a Future Prince or Princess:

Girls:

1. Matilda
2. Emma
3. Cecily
4. Adelaide
5. Isabel
6. Eleanor
7. Frances
8. Alexandra
9. Louisa
10. Amelia

Boys

1. Frederick
2. Alexander
3. Geoffrey
4. Lionel
5. Owen
6. Stephen
7. Jasper
8. Henry
9. Rupert
10. Augustus (“Gus”)

Some of the above names — such as Rupert and Owen — even made the list for Top Baby Names for 2011. The couple could opt for a less traditional name, but they certainly won’t want to choose anything too trendy. After all, a royal name must never go out of style!

Do you have any baby name suggestions for the royal couple?

The girls’ choices are excellent, but I’m not feeling Prince Geoffrey. Thanks for the nameberry shoutout!

I like the girls’ names — how about George or Benjamin for the boys?
