Don't eat the eggs!

Just when you thought it was safe to eat an omelet again, another egg recall is announced.

Cal-Maine Foods Inc., the nation’s biggest egg seller and distributor, has announced the recall of 288,000 eggs purchased from Ohio Fresh Eggs in Croton, Ohio.

While evidence of salmonella has been found at this farm, there have been no reports of illnesses from the eggs, which were distributed to food wholesalers and retailers in Arkansas, California, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas.

In a statement, officials for Cal-Maine Foods say that the recalled eggs should never have entered the food chain as the company was aware that salmonella had been found at that farm.  Cal-Maine was holding the eggs from distribution but somebody goofed and accidentally sent the bad eggs to a distributor.  Cal-Maine is really sorry about all that and promises to do better in the future.

But here’s where it gets interesting:  While Ohio Fresh Eggs was not involved in the massive egg recalls earlier this year, there is a connection.  In August, eggs from Wright County Egg in Galt, Iowa were recalled due to salmonella and the owner of that farm, Austin “Jack” DeCoster, has financial ties to Ohio Fresh Eggs. In addition, DeCoster has a history of shady dealing in the egg business and has been labeled a “habitual violator” of environmental laws in Iowa.

Sounds to me like somebody needs to be run out of the egg business.  In the meantime, here’s where to find detailed information about the recalled eggs.

Farm B sells eggs to megacorp A, which distributes the eggs to be sold under names E, F, G, H, I and J. I don’t what purpose that serves, except to dissipate damage to brand reputation when something like this happens.
