Don’t Forget to Set Your Clocks Back Tonight… and Change the Batteries in Your Smoke Alarm, Too

Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery
Time to suck it up, guys: after today, the world will be dark at 5 pm. Okay, maybe not the entire world according to this chart, but here on the East Coast for certain: it’s “winter time,” as standard time is also called. That makes perfect sense to me, because even though the official start of Winter is more than a month away, if it’s dark when you get up in the morning and dark when you eat dinner, the whole world seems kind of cold, no?
In addition to setting your clocks back an hour tonight, take a minute to change the batteries in your smoke alarm, as well. Jason Fitzpatrick at Lifehacker says, “A properly installed and tested home fire alarm with a fresh battery is one of the simplest and most effective things you can do to protect yourself and your family from a home fire.”
Energizer has teamed up with the International Fire Chiefs Association to offer free batteries at your local fire department. (Call to see if your FD is participating.) Energizer’s Change Your Clock Change Your Battery campaign is also offering free fire safety information and coloring pages for kids. Other things you can do with your extra hour tonight include making a fire escape plan and testing (or buying) your carbon monoxide detector. Sure, you could just get an extra hour of sleep, but changing your batteries will help you rest easy knowing your family is protected for another year.
