10-Year-Old Gives Birth
The child of a child.
Of course it’s possible. But it’s still hard to believe. A 10-year-old girl recently became a mother.
The Associated Press is reporting that a girl in southern Spain has given birth. She and her family, who live in Jerez de la Frontera, will retain custody of the baby, according to Micaela Navarro, the Andalusia region’s social affairs minister.
The department won’t release details about the baby, except to say that the newborn and its mother are doing fine. The father, whose name is not being released, is also a minor.
The young girl is originally from Romania. Hospital staff told local reporters that the girl’s mother (the baby’s grandmother) told them that it is not so uncommon for girls her daughter’s age in Romania to give birth.
Perhaps that’s the story this grandmother is going with. Perhaps it’s even true. But it’s still not safe for such young girls to give birth, not to mention the devastating consequences on the life of a child who is not even a teenager.

adair commented on Nov 11 10 at 8:24 amOk, I know in this day it is horrible to think about, and I honestly don’t know how a 10 year old can handle something that makes me want to rip my hair out (pregnant w/ my 3rd), but is it really that unsafe for her to give birth? My mind is a bit foggy with the century, but the age of Romeo and Juliet, they had children at a very young age. There were married with families by the age of 13! Granted their life spans weren’t the greatest, but that was due to diet and disease. If our bodies are designed for this, and we are capable of it, how can it really be that bad?
