Clint McCance, a member of the Midland School Board in Arkansas, is now under investigation for anti-gay hate speech on Facebook. The northern Arkansan allegedly launched an anti-gay screed on his Facebook page in response to another Facebook page that had been set up to show support for gay students in the wake of a series of suicides thought to be related to bullying.

McCance is reported to have written the following:

“Seriously they want me to wear purple because five queers killed themselves. The only way im wearin it for them is if they all commit suicide. I cant believe the people of this world have gotten this stupid. We are honoring the fact that they sinned and killed thereselves because of their sin. REALLY PEOPLE.”

Others commented on McCance’s tirade, some in support of the hateful sentiment, others opposed. McCance also allegedly responded to the response with more gay-bashing vitriol, claiming gay people ruin other (straight?) people’s lives and that if they can’t tolerate their sexuality being made fun of then they should keep it a secret. In yet another alleged response, this time for being called out as a Christian for behaving very un-Christianly and un-family-like, McCance’s response was that he would disown his child if he or she were gay.

Of course all of this back and forth is outrageous and heartbreaking and salacious, but the focus should be on whether an elected public official is spouting hate speech — especially if he is an elected public official who is given a vote on matters directly affecting children in his school district. If an investigation determines that, indeed, McCance wrote these things, it’s up to law enforcement to determine whether he can be charged with any crimes.

Even if he can’t, or if it turns out he didn’t write these things, now is definitely the time for the people of Midland school district to come forward and say that this kind of speech is intolerable. It’s also a time to circle around the kids of the Midland school district and start talking, the fear being that even one little kid is sitting there thinking he or she is, in anyway, not worthy of living.
