Graco Stroller Recall Prompted by 4 Deaths

Graco Recall
MSNBC is reporting that “two million Graco strollers are being recalled because of risks of strangulation and entrapment.” This recall, like so many others, is being labelled as voluntary, but it was prompted by four reported infant fatalities. Those deaths occurred between 2003 and 2005, so I’m not sure why it’s taken five years for the company to recall its product. Are all 2 million of the strollers that were sold still out there? I know I got about two years of inner-city travel out of the first stroller I bought and then it was dust.
In addition to the infant deaths, there have been “five reports of infants becoming entrapped in the strollers, resulting in cuts and bruises.”
MSNBC notes that “the strollers and travel systems were made before industry standards changed in January 2008 to require larger openings between the stroller’s tray and seat bottom, preventing the chance of entrapment.” The recalled strollers include “Graco Quattro Tour strollers and travel systems that were manufactured before November 2006 and MetroLite strollers and travel systems made before July 2007.” Affected strollers were sold at AAFES, Babies R Us, Burlington Coat Factory, Fred Meyer, Kmart, Meijers, Navy Exchange, Sears, Target and Walmart.

Joy commented on Oct 20 10 at 11:44 amThey shouldn’t recall products because parents do not use the safety straps, follow the directions, or supervise their children. I want to know if a product is unsafe due to how its made not if its unsafe only if I don’t do my job as a parent. Everything is unsafe for my child if I’m not supervising her and everything that comes with a strap is unsafe if I don’t use it. All these extra recalls being added to the recall list make it harder to find things that are unsafe if used correctly.

Nancy commented on Oct 20 10 at 3:04 pmThank you, Joy. I couldn’t agree with you more. Wherever we go, whether its to the zoo, a shopping mall or just for a walk to the park, I see other mothers and their careless disregard for their children. These are probably the same mothers that are outspoken about childhood vaccines. Don’t cause panic for the rest of us.
Kelly Stephens commented on Oct 23 10 at 1:40 pmNo kidding! I see moms with kids and strollers all the time that pay no attention to the kids. If your kid gets hurt, unfortunately its likey your fault as a parent. Accidents happen – but I saw a mom in Gymboree park her stroller in front of the kids tv and walk away to shop! the kid had to be almost a year, and could have easily manuevered himself out! It saddens me that people have to blame everything on something or someone else – strollers are NOT babysitters!
