Happy Bosses Day 2010!

It’s National Bosses Day 2010 and I’m wondering if I’ll get any cards. I certainly won’t count on it.

Although I’m generally the bossiest person in our house, I’m not sure my family would agree that I’m “the Boss.” I like to think my husband and I take turns with the job, but he might not agree with that (I’ll go ask him now).

And if I am the Boss, I’m not sure I’m doing a very good job at it. Although I’m good at delegating (especially to my husband, who is a very good worker!), I’m not great at conveying my expectations to my “employees.”

Often, I end up doing their job for them (like bringing in the dishes after dinner). Or I get frustrated that they can’t read my mind.

This morning, I badgered one of my “employees” so hard, I think she was nearly ready to quit. I’m not yeller, but I’m also not good at managing stress. When the boss of the house is having a bad day, everyone knows it!

According to The Chicago Tribune, a good boss “listens well enough that he sees the problem before it turns into a crisis. But if it turns into a crisis, the good boss doesn’t hide.”

I do my best to listen to my family — and I certainly don’t hide during a crisis. So maybe I’m not such a bad boss after all.

For the record, National Bosses Day is celebrated on October 16, but because tomorrow is Saturday, we’re celebrating it today instead. Personally, I thin it’s just another Hallmark holiday.

Who is the boss of your house? And what sort of job are they doing?

Ha! I was just telling my 3 yo the other day that I was in charge to which she countered “We’re BOTH in charge”…so, you see how that goes…

As a side note, I think this is the dumbest holiday ever. When I was in the paid working world I supervised a number of people, and the idea that they should get me something was ludicrous. I always told them that doing their best work was what a good “boss” should expect. Why in the world would they create a holiday where people felt pressured to buy their employers a gift? (Well, I know why, to sell stuff, but still.)
