Mom Gives Birth on 8/8/08, 9/9/09 and 10/10/10
On any given day, more than 10,000 babies are born in the United States. Considering that, it’s really not all that surprising that so many were born this past weekend on 10/10/10.
But while the odds of having such a special birthday may be pretty good, the odds of a family having three children with such birthdays has got to be pretty astronomical, right?
You would think so, but that’s exactly the case for a family in Rockford, Michigan. Barbara and Chad Soper were thrilled when their first child, Chloe Corrin, was born on 8/8/08. The very next year, they were blessed with a son, Cameron Dane, on 9/9/09. And this year? You guessed it. Their third child, Cearra Nicole, was born on 10/10/10.
In all three births, labor was induced but not because they were trying to give birth on a particular day. Barbara says the inductions were all medically necessary and were begun on the day before the children actually made their way into the world.
But back to those odds. How likely is it that one woman would give birth on three such auspicious dates? According Philip Stark, a professor of statistics at the University of California, Berkeley, the odds are better than you think.
Such dates on the calendar appear only during the first twelve years of every century, at least ten months apart. It only takes nine to make a baby and Stark says that if you allow for 11, you’ve got a 1 in 2,500 shot at doing what the Sopers did.
So, are they working on an 11/11/11 baby? Barbara says no and I don’t blame her. Having had a baby a year for three years straight, I’d say she’s got her hands full already.

bob commented on Oct 14 10 at 12:07 pmWe’ve already missed 6/6/6, so what’s the point?
Gille commented on Oct 14 10 at 3:32 pmThat’s cool though it would be cooler if it wasn’t induced and just happened that way. Now that would be something.
Elaine commented on Oct 15 10 at 6:27 pmThis couple is plain crazy…3 under 3, HELP! As far as being a miracle with the 8/8/8 9/9/9 etc birth it is kind of cool, but it is NOT a miracle! Giving birth on those 3 dates WITHOUT any induction would be one.
