A Chicken Nugget in the Making
Need a reason to quit feeding your kid chicken nuggets? Or maybe something that will convince your child to stop ordering them. How about this picture? That pretty pink paste? Well, that’s your chicken nugget in the making.
Just in case you’re not afraid of something that looks like pink toothpaste, here’s a little background info, from Gizmodo:
After chicken parts are broken down — all the knuckles and joints and other wacky stuff — it’s pressed through a sieve and then made into a paste. Because there’s bacteria all over everything, it’s all dunked in ammonia at some point. Then there’s the flavor issue, so a bunch of salty flavorings are added. And because you’d never eat pink chicken-y stuff, there’s also supplemental color.
Bits are squirted out, dunked in a batter and deep fried. Nummers!

jennifer commented on Oct 04 10 at 5:42 pmAs shown in the Snopes article linked to by the previous commenter, kids were shown the entire process of making chicken nuggets as part of Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution show. They were sufficiently grossed out seeing the chicken in the pink toothpaste stage, but, as soon as it looked like a familiar chicken nugget, they all wanted one. Jamie said UK kids refused the final product…
cheri commented on Oct 04 10 at 5:59 pmOk, just to clarify, the joints and knuckles are NOT in the Mechanically separated Meat (Pink gunk)….it is just the meat that is pulled OFF the knuckles and joints….but that does not lessen the EWWW at all. Eww.
Gretchen Powers commented on Oct 04 10 at 7:35 pmjust go vegetarian for heavens sake…it’s so much easier
Amanda commented on Oct 04 10 at 10:03 pmugh, gag me…
Mistress_Scorpio commented on Oct 05 10 at 12:05 amI’ve eaten worse things. Ever had chitlins or pigs feet?
Laure68 commented on Oct 05 10 at 12:49 amThis is gross, but I wouldn’t say becoming a vegetarian would eliminate these issues. Those veggie burgers you buy from the store have so much crap in them that I can’t pronounce.
These nuggets are a far cry from a home made, free-range chicken.
PlumbLucky commented on Oct 05 10 at 7:33 amHave to agree with Laure68 :-). Though that doesn’t mean I won’t be forwarding a link to my MIL with a “this is why he doesn’t get nuggets…”
michelle commented on Oct 05 10 at 10:42 amThere’s no excuse for ever feeding processed food to children. Homemade chicken nuggets:

Gretchen Powers commented on Oct 05 10 at 10:57 amThat’s a great recipe, if you like dead birds on your plate, but, what about all the poor people who can’t afford the ingredients or all the so very stretched working families who “just don’t have time” to prepare something like this from scratch, they DO have excuses, right?????? (I’ve heard allll that before here on babble)
Laure68 commented on Oct 05 10 at 1:07 pmDead birds, mmm yum. (Seriously, my grandma used to buy live chickens and kill them before cooking them, so the whole “dead animal” thing doesn’t gross me out.)
In any case, what does your argument have to do with becoming a vegetarian. Even vegetarians have a choice of processed vs. home-made, where processed will be easier.
Gretchen Powers commented on Oct 05 10 at 2:02 pmI dropped that argument because you can’t beat a dead horse…my last comment was not an argument for vegetarianism in that vein. Seriously, though, to me, a slurry of non-meat sludge is less gross than meat sludge, but that’s just me. I wouldn’t go bragging about eating veggie burgers or mock meat, myself. I do think it removes a whole lot of worry about what one eats when they don’t eat meat. The “dead animal” thing doesn’t “gross me out” I just think it’s cruel, actually. And I thought it was funny that the same person (I think, I get the michelles confused on Babble) that always talks about the poor and downtrodden says there’s “no excuse for ever feeding processed food to children”…people are always making excuses for everything on here…that’s what’s funny to me.
Leila commented on Oct 05 10 at 6:06 pmIf chicken nuggets is the ONLY meat your child with feeding disorder will eat (and since he won’t touch anything green becoming a vegan is out of the question), I’ll continue to feed him the nuggets gladly. The pink paste is not much more disgusting than any other processed food out there (ice cream, cookies, hot dogs, etc).
TiffTiff commented on Oct 06 10 at 12:05 amI feel like if air were made out of meat there would be humans eating that as well..its human nature to want to control and destroy..no coincidence that americans eat a lot of meat along side brazilians whose country is beautiful yet overridden with obsession of the flesh..that being said if it was uncovered that meat was actually mixed with human placenta and 4 tablespoons of sputum from a patient on a vent in the hospital…well lets just say there would still be people eating meat..just like there are people who still smoke..some even started the same week the campaigns came out with pics of diseased lungs.. so people will still consume into their bodies what is not good for them and may kill them..I hate to say it but its becoming a sub sector of natural selection..the irony is that any proud meat eater will justify killing animals stating its survival of the fittest or natural selection..so lets just say some humans who are naturally selected have decided to de-select themselves out of the choices they make..by the way I eat meat minus fast food and perdue(the man in the commercials is not the owner hes an actor)..just not everyday..ie its not 3/4 of my plate at dinner..not even twice a week. I was a veggie for five years and then I just started eating meat..I feel like who cares in the end..anything on the dollar menu at Mc Donald’s is going to be fake anyways..even the fruit and veggies..bc its on the dollar menu! The moral of the story is we buy what we can afford and try to stay away from second-hand smoke..even if we are the ones smoking.
TiffTiff commented on Oct 06 10 at 12:20 amCompanies know this..which is why any news story that breaks does not make a huge impact on the crowd at the meat concert..Ill speak on the USA bc its where im from..well here we have a high poverty rate and a high “convenience now, quick, easy and fast..ie im not waiting”..so the places that sell the meat Mc Flurries are only delivering to what the public responds to..its supply and demand..schezwan style or any way you want it..which apparently some want it meat sludge style…interestingly enough I feel that the whole “too poor” to eat veggies thing may be overrated..when I went full blown veggie my main reason was cost..chicken breasts (bonless!) was like 7$ while lentils at the healthfood store were like $2.95 for a huge bag..I was really on a budget ..not a homeless budget but a budget..that with a bag of rice and i was good to go…n last time I checked my loser veggie friends now are not wealthy..they are the least capitalistic group i know of..processed food in general is bad…something about a dead animal in a blender mohito style is just not appetizing..if there are food alternatives for patients with ostomy bags and half their intestines removed due to illness..well then there are alternative food eats for everyone..its all about choice..the choices on the menu should be to select or de-select oneself..
Manjari commented on Oct 06 10 at 9:42 amI saw this picture a while ago here on Strollerderby, and my kids haven;t touched a nugget since. They rarely ate them before, anyway, since we don’t really like processed food.
Rosana commented on Oct 06 10 at 11:17 amIsn’t the purpose of food to be processed with all that crap in it so it can taste and look great? This article made go “AHA” because I only tried nuggets once and they looked and tasted like horrible, now I know why.
michelle commented on Oct 06 10 at 12:15 pmI stand by all my comments. My husband and I both work full time and we can still manage to find plenty of quick/easy recipes online to make good food from scratch. There is no excuse for ME or anyone else earning a middle-class-and-up income to ever voluntarily feed processed food to their children. Poor/working class people shouldn’t either, but I understand why they are often forced to and wouldn’t judge them for it until we have some real changes in this country. The grownups in those cases can’t afford to eat anything better, either. But what possible reason could there be for so many restaurants in our relatively well-off neighborhood to have kids’ menus with industrial “chicken” nuggets on them while their parents have the local seasonal veggies and Niman Ranch lamb? That’s just wrong. Our kids eat what we eat — real food.
Tim commented on Oct 06 10 at 12:57 pmIf humans had not started eating meat, our brains would not have developed into what they are today. In the last few decades when scientists took over the job that had been done by farmers and ranchers for thousands of years, things changed. Meat is part of our species diet in nature and in civilization just as it is part of the diet of bears, racoons, dogs, venus fly traps, etc. It is normal and natural to eat meat. That is not justification for the way animals are treated in meat processing plants but it is justification for our species to continue eating the same natural diet it has been eating for countless years.
Rhonda commented on Oct 06 10 at 1:17 pmWhile there are a good many reasons not to eat fast food, this one is not true. You should do a little more research before you post “facts” like this. You’ve effectively made it so I can’t believe anything on your site – way to discredit yourself.
Tom Super commented on Oct 07 10 at 10:42 amMadeline,
Yes — it’s true. Poultry is sometimes mechanically separated and when it is, the resulting product is called mechanically separated poultry (MSP). It is NOT true, however, that this is how chicken nuggets are commonly made. The vast majority do not contain MSP. Nuggets are usually made from pieces of white meat and sometimes from a combination of white and dark meat.
Some processed meat products, like hot dogs and lunch meat, do contain MSP and this is stated on the ingredient label by law. This process is regulated and inspected by USDA, and if used, is included in the ingredient statement.
Even Snopes.com has an entry about the claims in this piece. Anyone who took the time to read this post should also visit http://bit.ly/b7zg2t and http://bit.ly/cSALAM for the facts.
Using technologies like this helps prevent the waste food, plain and simple. It is just a more technolgoical and economical way of cutting the remaining chicken meat off of the bone.
I feed my two small kids a balanced diet, which includes plenty of fruits and vegetables, and yes, often chicken nuggets.

Kelli commented on Oct 07 10 at 6:37 pmSorry, no poor person has an excuse either–you can get a whole chicken for five or six bucks. You can feed your family for pennies a plate if you’re willing to put in a small amount of effort.
K Alongi commented on Oct 21 10 at 1:16 amComments Probly Fish stix are also made similarly – the cheap ones – these r probly cheap store chkn nuggets, not McD’s? However, even working parents can fix a good dinner 2-3 times a week big enough for leftovers (even just Sat & Sun) and have a bit of leftovers & quickie meals other nights.
Michelle commented on Oct 02 11 at 6:57 pmMmmmm! Call me crazy but it doesn’t change my mind. I LOVE CHICKEN NUGGETS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
