September 25 is Worldwide Play Day

Saturday is the 7th Annual Worldwide Day of Play. To honor the day’s theme, Nickelodeon will shut off it’s entire media empire from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. That’s right, Nickeldeon is going dark for the day.

All their cable stations will be down, as well as their associated websites. Your kids will have to choose between playing outdoors or tuning in to the Disney Channel instead.

I didn’t think anything could make me love Nickelodeon, but this kind of does.

Why stop at once a year, though? Could we have a Worldwide Day of Play every Saturday? What about every afternoon from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., when kids should be running wild outdoors instead of parking in front of a TV or computer screen?

How will you celebrate Play Day? I’ll be at the Common Ground Fair in Maine, checking out organic farm animals and locally made crafts. I’m hoping to score some garlic bulbs to plant in our garden when we get home.

ok so it’s just a half step but it’s a good half step.

If you have to rely on your kids favorite channel turning itself off, then the problem is already out of control. And if it is not your problem, then I guess the “love” is the smug satisfaction that someone else’s kid isn’t getting to watch tv when you think they should be playing outside. It’s the same attitude that leads people to pine for the day formula will be available by prescription only.

4 hours does not a day make.

My comment is missing from this one too. What happened?

I have never liked this. My kids don’t watch as much nick now. They are more into Disney XD. When we did watch Nick Jr though it was a pain for me. Our kids don’t watch much t.v. to begin with, but they do get to watch about an hour before bed every night. That is my time with my husband to sit and eat, and just catch up at the end of the day, without the interruptions of children, while we still have some energy left. I get the idea behind it, but for most people it just doesn’t make sense. Not only that, but if your kids do nothing but watch t.v. anyway, then chances are they will just turn to a different channel, or turn on a movie, not turn off the t.v. and go outside.
