What’s So Wrong With Katy Perry on Sesame Street?
PBS spokesperson, if you’re out there, here’s at least one mom who would like to defend the Katy Perry Sesame Street appearance.
After a deluge of letters, emails and Facebook comments telling decrying the prominent cleavage of a the headline-grabbing guest host, the show’s bosses decided not to air the reworked version of Katy Perry’s “Hot N Cold” with Elmo.
Am I surprised by the outrage? No, of course not. We parents have a long history of protecting the children from things that really aren’t harmful.
So, sure, we can kick her and the deep crevasses of her upper-torso off the “Street.” But what’s the point? What about all the other cleavage? How are you going to keep your kids from looking at that?
Like Barbie. Are the parents opposed to Katy also giving her the boot? And Bratz dolls? Even the new ones shouldn’t make the cut, if Katy Perry is the new chesty standard.
And what about school drop-off and pick-up? We’re a skimpy tank-top wearing nation. Katy Perry has nothing on more than one parent at yesterday’s back-to-school night. Did I shield my kids’ eyes? No. That would be futile.
Beach? Pool? Where does it end. It doesn’t.
Unless your Sesame Street watcher is in Middle School, the song and dance will soon be forgotten. It’s just no big deal.
Bring back Katy Perry! (Check out the rest of the line-up here).

Gretchen Powers commented on Sep 23 10 at 4:25 pmMy thoughts, again: I read the thing over on Salon and my problem is not really with her cleavage, but why is an artist like Katy Perry, with pretty sexy lyrics, like not just sexy, but trashy sexy, going to be on Sesame Street at all? I have no problem with it for older teens, college kids, adults, but why would a Sesame age kid even know or care who this woman is? They shouldn’t. I know she’s not going to sing the trashy stuff on the show, but still? Why have her on at all? My kid doesn’t even like Sesame, so it’s not skin off my nose. I do think Katy Perry’s music is insipid. “Milk, milk, lemonade”…are you freakin’ kidding me?
