Video: Why I Can’t Make Mom Friends

Have you ever introduced yourself to another mom at the park and felt helpless as the encounter turned into total disaster? Then you’ll love this brand-new xtranormal.com web-series, Mompetition.
Despite the millions of funny kid videos online, the subject of parenting itself has been largely overlooked by the makers of viral content. I’m sort of surprised it’s taken this long for someone to realize what a treasure trove of material mommy competition provides. Like all xtranormal videos, this film is digitally animated and voiced by a type recognition system. (Xtranormal’s slogan is, “If you can type, you can make movies.”) There’s something inherently hilarious about hearing a script read by a robotic voice, but add in the Stepford Wives quality of two mothers sizing each other up, and you’ve got yourself a laugh-out-loud delight. The darker-skinned tennis lady seems to be cast as the “normal” one and I don’t get the sense of one-up-manship from her. I will say, as someone whose past comments on Babble may have made me appear to be “competitive” that, for me, it wasn’t really about competition or being better than another parent, it was about being passionate about the choices made and having not that much else going on to be passionate about. Somehow, as my kid as gotten older, just at the end of this summer, I am not really at all interested in comparative parenting styles, or anything to do with parenting so much and am much more interested in anything other than talk of kids and parenting. It all seems very boring and tedious suddenly.
