Super Harvest Moon Tonight
Super harvest moon makes a rare appearance
A super harvest moon is a rare occurrence and one that your kids can enjoy tonight. For the first time in 20 years, the northern autumn is beginning on the night of a full moon. At exactly 11:09 pm, the autumnal equinox will begin and it will officially be fall. But as the sun sets, the moon will rise at the same time and create an unusually colorful and bright sky.
The name harvest moon is attributed to farmers of old, who used that term to refer to the full moon closest to the harvest date. When that full moon happened to coincide with the autumnal equinox, it was declared a super harvest moon.
And if all that isn’t special enough, Jupiter, the largest planet in the solar system, will be shining especially bright and close to the moon tonight. It is currently closer to Earth than it has been in 47 years and will be easily visible to the naked eye for the next several days.
So, what are you waiting for? Get the kids out into the yard this evening and enjoy the rare spectacle of the super harvest moon.
