Hannah Montana Triggers Seizures

Some people find Hannah Montana irritating. But one 12-year-old girl in Florida finds her absolutely unbearable.

The girl has epileptic seizures at the sound of Miley Cyrus’ rock star alter ego’s voice, according to MSNBC.com.

How is that possible?

Believe it or not, there is a medical condition that can explain what’s going on.

Talk about an extreme reaction to the teenage pop star!

The girl suffers from a rare condition known as reflex epilepsy, in which seizures are triggered by certain things in the environment — anything from warm water to the sound of dogs barking to…well, Hannah Montana singing.

I vaguely remember hearing about a similar situation years ago in which a woman suffered from seizures when she heard the voice of “Entertainment Tonight” host Mary Hart. Then, there were those Japanese kids who reportedly suffered from seizures that were triggered by Pokemon.

In the case of the Florida girl, her seizures are triggered by ”low baritone-type sounds” like dogs barking and some Hannah Montana songs, according to Dr. Paul R. Carney, a pediatric neurologist and professor at the University of Florida.

The good news is that the girl is now on medication and reportedly has gone from having as many as 25-30 seizures a day to one a week. And not surprisingly, she’s no longer a Hannah Montana fan.

It’s definitely not Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus’ fault. Nobody is suggesting it is. I’m simply fascinated by this rare condition.

Comments I was fascinated by this as I’ve had seizures caused by very loud rock music. So now I avoid situations like loud concerts, etc. I’ve had to learn. Makes me feel like I’m not alone!
