Brain Scan May Unlock Kid’s Minds
Doctors believe they’ve found a way to use a simple MRI to diagnose emerging problems in children’s mental health.
As the brain grows, it generally develops in a particular pattern. Charting the growth of a child’s brain could be a useful diagnostic tool for seeing areas where learning may be challenged or other mental health issues are likely to arise.
Not only could the brain scans diagnose problems, they could help scientists design therapies and measure their success.
This could be an extremely valuable tool. It could also be one more thing for parents to worry about.
The idea of using MRIs as an addendum to a child’s traditional height and weight growth chart has appeal for doctors. But I think about all the headaches and drama I’ve seen new parents go through fussing over their baby’s position on that infamous chart, and the notion kind of makes my skin crawl.
What about you? Are you excited about the possibility of adding a routine brain scan to your child’s medical records, or a little disturbed?

m. commented on Sep 10 10 at 6:35 pmI think that this sounds like a terrible idea. There are so many trajectories and possible treatments for each disorder, I can’t even imagine how that would be of benefit on an every-child basis.
Thom Shepard commented on Sep 13 10 at 9:26 amI agree that this is not a good idea, and for several reasons. I’m sure there are costs that would eventually if not immediately impact a family’s medical insurance. Also, the very thought of getting an MRI can be a traumatic proposition for both kids and adults.
