CPSC Found No Link Between Pampers Dry Max and Diaper Rash
Remember a few months ago when a rash of complaints from parents resulted in lawsuits against Pampers, the makers of the Dry Max diapers accused of causing chemical burns? Pampers executives felt they’d been the victims of a smear campaign coming from Huggies, thus resulting in ”The Diaper Wars.”
Well, guess what? According to an evaluation released today by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, Pampers execs may have been right.
According to the CPSC’s press release, they have “reviewed consumer incident reports and other information involving Pampers Dry Max diapers. To date, the review has not identified any specific cause linking Dry Max diapers to diaper rash.”
They note that of the 4,700 incident reports they’ve received since April, “nearly 85 percent of these complaints came in May and then dropped off significantly.” To put it colloquially: that sounds pretty shady to me. ”As part of its technical evaluation, staff considered certain characteristics of the diaper, including the materials used, the construction of the diaper, and heat and moisture retention issues.” They also “reviewed clinical and toxicological data found in published, peer-reviewed medical literature” and “critically reviewed data submitted by Procter & Gamble (P&G) and the results of a human cumulative irritation patch study conducted by P&G in May 2010.”
If Pampers were the victims of a smear campaign, I have to ask: why? We all know by now that the Internet is a very powerful tool, but who is so unethical as to harness it in such a way? It frightens me that the makers of a baby product would stoop so low. What parent would be willing to lie about their baby having a chemical burn? Moreover, who has the time? If the parents who have complained are telling the truth, then why is it that the CPSC found no evidence that Dry Max is a faulty product? Has anyone out there used Dry Max? Let me know what you think.

CPSC Found No Link Between Pampers Dry Max and Diaper Rash … « RattleBaby.com commented on Sep 03 10 at 12:49 pmbob commented on Sep 02 10 at 2:08 pmWe had some persistent diaper rash issues around the time and switched from Pampers. But diaper brand wasn’t the only variable in play, so no solid conclusions. That said, I’m not sure how to square the CPSC review finding with this:
http://www.zrecommends.com/detail/final-results-of-our-pampers-dry-max-testing/ which suggests possible variation from diaper to diaper and involved actual testing.
.
Also wondering, where can I sign up to take part in a “human cumulative irritation patch study”? Sounds like fun!
Amy commented on Sep 02 10 at 2:13 pmMy son got severe diaper rash after using Pampers. No other variables had changed–we were using the same diaper brand; same diaper cream; changing him as often; feeding him the same diet. it kept getting worse to the point I was going to take him to the doctor, and then someone told me, “you know, I’ve heard the new version of Pampers causes diaper rash.” So now we only use store brands and no more problems.
Amy commented on Sep 02 10 at 2:15 pmI’m just adding that I have recieved no compensation from “the store brands” for my “endorsement.”
bob commented on Sep 02 10 at 2:19 pmI’m not sure what kind of drop-off in complaints would be normal. Once the issue was widely-known in the parenting communities, I would expect those with sensitivities would just switch and see no point to filing complaints.
carolyncastiglia commented on Sep 02 10 at 2:35 pmBob – interesting, especially this part: Dry Max Pampers from two different “batches” were associated with different levels of both initial and extended irritation.
Sarah commented on Sep 02 10 at 2:42 pmWe use a combo of cloth and disposables, but while on a 5 week vacation, we used only disposables. We have always used Target brand and Pampers. My son was getting diaper rash from the Target diapers because he was not used to wearing them all the time, IMO. Switched to Huggies Natural for the trip. No more diaper rash. However, I don’t really love Huggies, and the Target diapers weren’t getting us through the night, so I got some Pampers Dry Max for night time and again, we’ve had no issues with diaper rash at all with them. Still prefer cloth for at home though!
Jessica commented on Sep 02 10 at 2:57 pmI have used the Pampers Dry Max with my daughter no issues we usually use whatever we have a coupon for and we even got free samples of the dry max in the mail i really dont have a preference between huggies or pampers both seem to do their job for me.
Robyn commented on Sep 02 10 at 4:19 pmThe CPSC used data from Proctor & Gamble studies. That’s like the cigarette industry commissioning a study on lung cancer! My guess is that complaints dropped off because people switched to other brands.
maresi commented on Sep 02 10 at 4:26 pmOur daughter is usually in cloth, but we used to use Pampers for backup. Once they switched to Drymax, she immediately had terrible rash. No other diaper has ever caused this, and I changed her frequently. Like Amy above, there were no other variables. I don’t buy their findings.
And no, I don’t work for Huggies or any other diaper company. I work at a church.
Em commented on Sep 02 10 at 4:43 pmMy son had no problem with the old Pampers or the Dry-Max ones, nor with a bunch of other brands, but Luvs give him a horrible rash. It’s been my feeling that when Pampers updated their product, some kids who weren’t allergic to the old diapers would be allergic to these. Likewise, some kids who had problems with Pampers in the past may not have those problems with the new product.
laura commented on Sep 02 10 at 8:15 pmMy daughter got a bad rash after using the new diapers. I took her to the dr for treatment and asked if it could be from the pampers. She said it was highly unlikely, people flip out and blame the diaper companies for rashes when they so much as change the packaging. She said don’t throw out the rest of the package just yet. And I believed her, mostly because I didn’t want to be one of those crazy people who takes anecdotal information as science (eg, Jenny McCarthy). Sure enough, my doctor was right. We still use them and the rash hasn’t come back. I really like pampers and I’m glad I tried again.
JBoogie commented on Sep 02 10 at 8:23 pmWe used a variety of Pampers, Huggies, Luvs…whatever I got at my baby showers, really, and we fought a persistent diaper rash until we switched to cloth. Never, in a million years, did I think I would want to cloth diaper, but I absolutely love it and I honestly can’t remember the last time we had to use a diaper rash cream (or had a poop blowout up the back or down the legs). Obviously, my son has sensitive skin, and cloth diapers aren’t for everyone, but I think it’s worth saying that a bumGenius ain’t your mama’s cloth diaper. And cotton and fleece don’t cause chemical burns.
Julie commented on Sep 03 10 at 7:02 amI’m one of the parents who submitted a formal complaint. Why? Because my poor little boy had a red butt for a month because it never occurred to me that it could have been his diapers causing it. And if they need to test old diapers, in case Pampers changed their products as a result of the complaints, I have about 100 diapers left. I’m guessing that’s why the complaints dropped off. We used Pampers for all of my son’s previous 22 months of life and I’m appalled that they made such an inferior product and then denied it. I will NEVER buy Pampers again and will recommend no one else do it either.
Laura commented on Sep 03 10 at 10:45 amI was using Pampers Swaddlers and switched to Huggies Little Snugglers after reading about all issues with Dry Max. In our case, my daughter started getting diaper rash from Huggies (in addition to leaking out the legs ALL the time!). I thought I might try the Pampers again since it seemed like a lot of hype to me. Her rash cleared up right away and they just work better for her. I’ve since switched to Luvs and am still considering cloth, but I had no issues with Pampers Dry Max.
K. commented on Sep 06 10 at 4:00 pmI have used all brands of diapers on my son over the last year and the only ones I have had a rash problem with were the Target brand ones. Those were our only blowouts, too. I like the other store brands as well as the pampers. The Huggies leaked a lot, but no rash with them.
