Five Books to Consider Bringing on that Weekend Getaway
If you’re like me, the sands of time do not always pass effortlessly through the hour glass when spending a week on the beach with one’s children. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate a good vacay by the sea as much as the next parent but how many sand castles can you make before you start daydreaming about Donald Trump and his demolition crew? Anyway, for those of you seeking to sneak a few adult moments amid the roar of the surf and the shouts for ice cream, here are some highly recommended beach reads:
Janelle Brown proves that there is indeed an LA lit scene and that she is one of its rising stars with the charmingly acerbic and spot-on, This is Where We Live. Perfectly capturing the tenuous economic moment in which we all live, the novel chronicles the break-up of an ultra-hip LA couple, as nefariously adjusted mortgage payments lay waste to bohemian fantasies.
Cathie Beck’s Cheap Cabernet proves that there is always room for one more memoir, provided it is as moving, funny and original as her account of her intense four year friendship with Denise, a woman she met though an ad she placed in the paper for a bogus woman’s group. Seeking friendship and a little fun after many hardscrabble years of being a single mother, Beck got far more than she could have hoped – a life-changing four year bond made all the more poignant by Denise’s heroic battle with multiple sclerosis.
You’ve heard of the Seven Year Itch. Now comes the Seven Year Switch from Claire Cook, author of “Must Love Dogs” and the appropriately titled “Life’s A Beach.” Cook’s latest beach blanket-friendly tome follows a single mom (a reliable beach lit trope if there was one) as she learns to move beyond the pain of a failed relationship and let life back in.
Thinking you made a mistake in your choice of career and that you should have set out to become a master (or mistress) of the universe? Novelist Martha McPhee explores the world of what-could-have-been and what-can-be in Dear Money when writer India Palmer gets the chance to trade places with a wealthy bond trader.
For all those fans of Rob Sachs’ hilarious, water-cooler worthy NPR podcast, “What Would Rob Do, “ comes the book you’ve been waiting for – the eponymous What Would Rob Do? A veritable Miss Manners when it comes to life’s incredibly awkward, bizarre moments, Rob offers his unique insights on how to survive a variety of daily indignities, like say… that time when some dude and his buds on the blanket directly next to yours was chortling loudly over an incredibly racy magazine while your kids were busy toweling off after a day at the beach…
