Don’t Freak Out if Your Child Lisps
Cindy Brady, Sally Draper, Sylvester the Cat. All cute. All lisp. It’s part of their charm. Or, in the case of Sally Draper was part of her charm.
Kiernan Shipka, the lovely 10-year-old who plays Sally on AMC’s wildly popular “Mad Men” has done away with her lisp. In addition to a little speech therapy, Shipka did with her lisp what most kids who have one do: she out grew it.
Your lisper most likely will too, but here’s what you should know about lisps.
There are several different kinds of lisps. The Cindy Brady/Sally Draper lisp is known as an “interdental lisp,” and it’s made when the tongue comes too close to the teeth when articulating the “s” and “z” sounds. Most children with an interdental lisp outgrow it by the time they are 7 or 8. If the child hasn’t gotten the delicate positioning of the “s” sound down by then, it’s time to call in a speech therapist who can coach things along.
