8-Year-Old Girl Selling Silly Bandz to Raise Money for Gulf Birds
Micro-donating has become increasingly popular thanks to the Internet and mobile phones, but one 8-year-old girl in Canton, Ohio is collecting small donations the old-fashioned way. Maggie Sexton is selling her Silly Bandz for charity.
Maggie, “a big fan of the Weather Channel,” has been following their coverage of the BP oil spill and its adverse effect on birds in the region. Sexton approached her mother, looking for ways in which she could help the animal rescue effort. “As adults, we think about a bake sale, car wash, and odd jobs we can do to raise money, but Maggie had a plan of her own,” says her mom, Melissa. “She decided to raise money using her Silly Bandz.”
Maggie’s willingness to part with the plastic bracelets is a touching indication of her concern and desire to make a difference, given how crazed kids have become over the collectibles in the last few months.
CantonRep.com reports that the third grader had raised $190 as of last week and is still accepting donations. She’s planning to donate the final amount to the International Bird Rescue Research Center. If you’d like to give, click the link to CantonRep.com, which includes an email address you can write to about helping Maggie achieve her goal.
Maggie’s story makes me wonder, are there simple ways in which we can teach our children about charity and stewardship? I’ve tried to expose my daughter to the notion of civic duty, taking her with me as I canvassed for Obama in the last presidential election. I’d love to hear your stories about ways in which you’ve inspired your kids to get involved with a cause dear to you, or ways your children have inspired you to make a difference.

We created Faith Bands—inspirational bandz based on Bible stories and biblical themes. We currently have 14 different sets of inspirational Faith Bands. We also have eight sets of general market bands (animal shapes, automobiles, etc.) because the demand is so great. We’re constantly adding more unique bandz designs to our already rare inventory.
We created these bandz as a way for people to share their faith. Swanson Christian Products—the company that created Faith Bands—has been in business for over 75 years as a Christian product wholesale distributor.
