Meet The Original Grandparents

logo 300x157 Meet The Original GrandparentsHave you met the Original Grandparents? If not, let me introduce you.

The Original Grandparents are Harry and Barbara Cooper, aged 98 and 93 respectively. They’ve been married 72 years and, courtesy of their blog The OG’s, they are the blogosphere’s most unlikely new stars.

The blog was born, in part, out of tragedy. One of the unfortunate aspects of long life is that you risk outliving your children, and that’s what happened to Harry and Barbara Cooper. Their daughter passed away in 2007, and their son died suddenly a few months later. Two of their grandchildren — Chinta and Kim Cooper — stepped in to care for their depressed and reeling grandparents. It was the two granddaughters who got the idea to set up the blog.

The couple now lives in a Los Angeles retirement home and they appear to be as in love with one another as they day they met. They kiss and exchange affectionate banter that seems to have come straight out of the screwball comedies of their youth. On the OG’s, they talk about their lives, share their wit and wisdom and, via Barbara Cooper’s video series “Ask Grandma Anything”  offer life advice to those who write and ask. Barbara Cooper also Twitters and posts reviews to Yelp. She likes cream puffs but says no to Lady Gaga (“She isn’t doing anything new.”).

Not to be outdone, Harry Cooper gives his thoughts on modern computer gadgets via his video series “PopPop’s Adventure Corner.”

Check them out. You’ll probably fall in love. I know I did.

Finally, if you can’t get enough of the OG’s, let me toss out one book recommendation. In the pre-Internet days, Los Angeles based journalist Joy Horowitz decided to undertake a similar project with her ninetysomething grandmothers. The result was the delightful Tessie and Pearlie: A Granddaughter’s Story.
