Does Kate Gosselin really need mommy ‘me’ time?

If you are the headline writers for RadarOnline, the answer is yes. “Everyone needs a little ‘me’ time, especially if you’re a mom-of-eight,” blared the celebrity gossip site as they shared their hot-off-the-digital-presses photos of Kate Gosselin getting her nails done and visiting the tanning salon.

Let’s take this apart, shall we?

First off, Kate Gosselin is not indulging in “me” time here. She’s a TV star, one who lives with cameras in her home. She likely views leaving her house to get a manicure and visit the tanning salon as part of the requirements of her job, not a respite period. Presenting her as a typical mom looking desperate for a few minutes to herself is laughably out-of-touch at best, not to mention out and out offensive to the vast majority of moms, who don’t have a staff and camera crew to keep an eye on the kids when they need to get away for even ten minutes.

But that’s minor compared to the ridiculous notion that Kate Gosselin even needs a few moments to herself. The most casual consumer of the tabloid tsunami that is Kate Gosselin’s life can pick up on the fact that the entirety of Kate Gosselin’s existence can be described as “me time.” It’s always all about Kate. You notice the names of her kids in her show’s title? Me neither. It’s “Kate Plus 8.” This woman is, in fact, so ridiculously self-obsessed that she exclaimed in the middle of the most recent episode while feeding her eight children lunch on the family’s estate-like spread, “Am I grumpy? Yes. You would be to if you had to run 26 acres alone.”

Uh, who is alone here? This woman has childcare help (some of which was supposedly paid for by the producers of Dancing with Stars), a security detail, and the omnipresent camera crew. Hell, Kate didn’t even build the chicken coop that was the centerpiece of the most recent episode by her lonesome only. A group of local farmers did it.

Finally, that manicure won’t hold up long under the demands of taking care of a brood of chickens. I don’t know who is going to be taking care of that coop when the cameras aren’t around but, somehow, I’m betting the answer isn’t Kate.
