Post-Cesarean Hysterectomies Increase Risk of Death
Hysterectomies have long been thought of as extremely safe procedures. So much so that they have long been accused of being performed unnecessarily.
During childbirth, however, hysterectomies carry with them a dramatic increase in the risk of death — 25 times higher than non-obstetric related hysterectomies.
The risk of death from these procedures under any circumstances is still quite low, but other complications also rose dramatically when hysterectomies were performed following birth: bladder and ureteral injuries, the need for a second operation, postoperative hemorrhage, wound complications, and blood clots. Though hysterectomies are performed following vaginal births, they are six times more likely following cesarean deliveries.
As doctors grapple with a sudden and unexpected increase in the maternal mortality rate in the U.S., changes including lowering the number of c-sections is high on the list.
