Pampers to Complaining Parents: Chill, You Big Babies!

51eoO4Zml3L 300x300 Pampers to Complaining Parents: Chill, You Big Babies!Pampers is dismissing the complaints of parents, via Facebook (and anywhere else they can find) that their new “Dry Max” diapers cause what one mom described as “the worst diaper rash ever.” Reports of chemical rashes, bleeding and welts abound online, but a Proctor and Gamble press release says, unequivocably, that any connection between its product and problem rashes is “completely false.” Why? Because all the shocking chemicals, etc., hidden away inside the absorbent diaper interior are exactly the same stuff you’ll find in any other disposable–including the discontinued products the Dry Max diapers displaced.  Does that mean disposable diapers cause rashes? Nope.

P&G blames the rumors about its products on a “small group of parents, some of whom are unhappy that we replaced our older Cruisers and Swaddlers” and adds fans of competing products and proponents of cloth diapers to the list of those causing the unwarranted furor. Babies get rashes, it says, in an unmistakeable tone of exasperation. Get over it. They note, too, that disposable diapers “have in fact reduced the incidence of rash by more than 50%.” Of course, that’s exactly what you’d expect a company that manufactures disposable diapers to say–but it checks out. “Babies wearing superabsorbent disposable diapers with a central gelling material have fewer episodes of diaper dermatitis compared with their counterparts wearing cloth diapers.” The same study notes that dyes can cause a problem for some babies, but Pampers says there are no new materials (or dyes) used in the Dry Max product.

Bethany Sanders reported on the initial shots fired in this battle on Strollerderby back in January, and noted that some of the dismay came from a marketing choice–Pampers didn’t explain that the new diapers felt thinner (and “cheaper”) because they’re meant to be more environmentally friendly, and parents may have felt like the different diapers amounted to a Pampers bait-and-switch. But it’s gone beyond 25 members of a Facebook page; that page is 5000 members strong now, and, as Madeline Holler reported yesterday, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has launched an investigation.

Pampers remains adamant: there’s nothing wrong with the diapers, in fact, they’re better than the old ones. They “do not and cannot cause so-called chemical burns or other serious skin conditions.” That’s a great way to defend your product, but maybe not the best way to handle angry parents and a possible consumer-relations disaster. I have to be honest–when it comes to the diapers’ safety, I believe them. These things are big business, and P&G doesn’t fool around when $8 billion is at stake. People have been complaining about disposable diapers for years. The science just doesn’t back it up. I wouldn’t argue with one parent whose kid had fewer rashes using one product than another–every baby is different. There’s just nothing that suggests a preference one way or the other across the board for this reason.

But I do question the tone of Pampers’ reaction. One Facebook poster says she’ll quit buying their products just “because of the way Pampers is handling this.” Maybe P&G would be better off somehow making nice.

Parents sue Pampers over diaper rash. | Strollerderby commented on May 20 10 at 9:48 pm

They may have not changed their ingredients, but Pampers has admitted to removing certain liners, exposing bare skin to harsh chemicals that they were not previously exposed to.

My daughter had a significant burn from the new Dry Max. We had used them her whole life (she’s 2) and suddenly she developed a horrible burn after Pampers switched their Cruisers. I know the difference between a “diaper rash” as Jodi Allen and her cohorts call this, and a burn. I am a medical provider myself and this is NOT an “ordinary diaper rash”. Pampers should be ashamed of themselves. I told my mom that it looked like someone used a vegetable peeler on my daughter, and then that blistered. It was HORRIFIC and I 100% link it to these new diapers. Within 24 hours of being in Huggies, her blisters were healing. 5 days later, a pink area remains. It may or may not scar. My nephew was also burned by these diapers. If Pampers would like to call his case “diaper rash”, then explain to me how he got a “diaper rash” over his hip area? It was the first problem in his life and he is 2.5 years old. He has a scar from it.

It is so upsetting that Pampers cannot just accept this reality and acknowledge the THOUSANDS of parents who know their children better than the insulting people representing Pampers—Jodi Allen, Dr. Kimberley Thompson, and Mr. McLeary. Dr. Kimberley Thompson was quoted as referring to this situation as “an urban legend”. Give me a break, Pampers. We are smart, educated mothers who know the difference between a diaper rash and something more ominous.

I work for a very large and well-known healthcare system. I have been advocating against Pampers amongst fellow providers, and it’s not surprising that other providers have also had patients/children/relatives who have had issues with these diapers. They are slowly but surely beginning to advise changing brands of diapers—as they should be. No child should have to suffer through this.

I have forever lost faith in Pampers. They care more about saving money than they do about the wellbeing of our children.

Nothing is worth seeing your child scream in excruciating pain and begging “noooo mommy…pwease?” over a diaper change. That is just heartbreaking and I am disgusted that this company can’t recognize a serious situation as such.

Interesting stance…tell that to my coworker whose month old baby daughter had the worst diaper rash ever until his wife switched over to another brand. Hmm…whatever Pampers.

We’ve been pretty faithful to Pampers since our son was born nine months ago, with only occasional forays into other brands to check them out. Pampers has been, until recently, the very best. Our son has long slept 10+ hours, and only rarely woke up because his diaper was uncomfortably wet. However, since the switch, we have to get up and change him after a max of five hours, lest we find that he has wet through the diaper and his pj’s AGAIN. The new ones are just as good, or even better? Tell that to my rediscovered (and not welcome) sleepless self.

I finally ran through my stockpile of diapers and had to buy new boxes of pampers swaddlers in the last week. We never had any problems with leaking before, but two days in a row we’ve had major leakage with the new diapers, leading to soaking wet pajamas. The new pampers are way inferior to the old product. I’ve also noticed having to wipe away some small globs of gel off of my daughter’s skin while changing her (the absorbent gel in the diaper). Never noticed this before with the old diapers. Oh, Pampers, saying your new product is better doesn’t make it so. :P

No new dyes? The inner liner of the Dry Max Cruisers are purple, when the old cruisers were white. Even if the materials are the same, since they have removed all paper fluff the baby’s skin may be coming into contact with some chemical it didn’t before, and some babies might be sensitive to that. Pampers’ perfumes give me migraines so I don’t use them regularly anyhow, but I did try the three diaper sample of Dry Max. I liked them, we had no leaks (and used one overnight) and no rash and if they didn’t have perfumes I might buy them, so I don’t have a dog in this fight, but I’m interested to see how it plays out.

I’m confused though on Pampers statement that the diapers have the same things in them as before. If that’s the case, then how are these diapers so much thinner and better than before if it’s just the same old stuff?

Ahhh @ Mommy1, I just read in your comment that they took away a layer. That makes sense now. Still not gonna buy Pampers even though my daughter hasn’t had a problem.

I have never seen such a rash on my baby before using pampers. My childs rash is so inflamed that she started walking with a swagger to avoid rubbing yourself more raw. Today, she took a fall and busted her lip pretty badly all because of this rash she got from pampers! I know it’s pampers causing this because a mother just knows these kinds of things! Pampers had best do something about this and they had best do it soon.
Sincerely one pissed off mother,

We used Pampers Swaddlers on my son for two months. He developed the worst diaper rash I have every seen; blisters and open, bleeding sores! I tried everything to heal it, including prescription diaper cream, nothing worked. It broke my heart to hear him cry every time he wet his diaper, because it stung the sores. I finally switched him to a chlorine-free brand of diapers, and haven’t looked back since. My son hasn’t had even a hint of diaper rash since we made the switch. It stands to reason that diapers containing chlorine would cause problems; everyone knows that mixing bleach (chlorine) and ammonia (urine) creates a toxic chemical (ammonium chloride, it’s deadly!)… So, I am a loyal user of Seventh Generation Chlorine Free diapers AND wipes. I’ll never use regular diapers on my son again!

Since my sons birth 10/28/2009 i’ve used pamper products on my son and had NO problems untill recently when they introduced the new dry max. I started using dry max and quickly noticed that it irradiated my sons penis so bad, i pulled back the fore skin and noticed it was burned all the way around the tip. i believe its from the diapers because i never had this problem before.
