Intuition: There’s An App For That
Ever wish you had the superpowers your mom seemed to have? The ones that let her never forget an appointment or a birthday? The ones that helped her bring home your favorite treat from the grocery store and remember the exact book your sister wanted for her birthday? There’s an app for that.
A new organizational app for the iPhone called Intuition promises to help you manage the tasks of motherhood.
There are, of course, dozens of apps to help you keep track of appointments and manage your to-do lists. Why bother with one more? In addition to being adorably flower-themed, this one is just good.
Gasp! Tweens are wearing makeup.
Are you shocked to learn that tweens are wearing makeup?
The New York Times seems to think it’s big news. Me? Not so much.
Sure, they cite a recent report from the NPD Group, a consumer market research group, which reports that regular use of certain cosmetics is rising sharply among tween girls.
But the way the Times reports on the story, they make it sound as if wearing lip gloss is just one step away from topless dancing.
Reporter Douglas Quenqua refers to Bonne Bell’s Lip Smackers, the scented lip gloss I collected as a kid, as the “soft soft.” The hard stuff, of course, being lipstick, eyeliner and mascara. Continue reading »
Rielle Speaks ….Again
The seemingly never-ending train wreck of John Edwards’ once promising political career jumped the tracks again Thursday, when Rielle Hunter, the most famous political mistress this side of Camilla Parker-Bowles, decided to tell her story once more, no doubt for the benefit of the five people in the United States who have yet to figure out exactly who she is.
In keeping with the spirit of the New Age mumbo jumbo she used to justify the affair in a GQ interview published last month, Hunter bared her soul to TV’s high priestess of self-actualization Oprah Winfrey, opining about how she began a relationship with Edwards to help him in his search to become “more his authentic self” and “to live a life of truth.” That quest included making the infamous sex tape “in the heat of the moment,” and, in the act that brought the entire mess to public attention, making a decision to not use birth control.
There’s really not a lot left to say here except GO AWAY NOW. PLEASE. Continue reading »
Vote for the Worst Toys of 2010
Will it be the faux nail salon or the mini Computer workstation? The Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood is inviting you to vote for which of their five top picks for a “TOADY” award–that’s Toys Oppressive and Destructive to Young Children. It’s a tough choice among some outstanding candidates.

Company sells chocolate flavored formula to toddlers
Worried that your toddler isn’t getting enough chocolate in her diet?
You’re in luck! Formula company Mead-Johnson recently introduced chocolate and vanilla-flavored versions of their Enfagrow formulas for toddlers.
“What’s next, genetically modifying moms to produce chocolate breast milk?” writes New York University nutrition professor and author Marion Nestle in The Atlantic.
Nutritionists have complained for years about toddler formula because after a child’s first birthday, food should replace milk as the primary source of nutrients. And the milk your child is going to drink certainly doesn’t need to be flavored with sugar and cocoa.
What’s Your Dream Food Label?
The Food and Drug Administration wants everyday consumers’ input on food labeling. Not the standardized nutrition labels found on the back of packaged foods, but the stuff on the front. What information would you like to have in addition to the stamps and seals and Smart Choice endorsements that, once they started showing up on stuff like Fruit Loops, kind of became meaningless.
The LA Times is pointing readers to this form at a government regulations website (and God help us all if whoever did the form is also designing new labels). Tip: click on “Submit Comment” just above text box if you’re short on time.
Here’s what I’d like to see: Continue reading »
Breaking News: Mass Legislature Passes Anti-Bullying Law
The January suicide of tormented 15-year-old South Hadley, MA student Phoebe Prince rocked the nation and shed much-needed light on the grave seriousness of bullying in schools. Strollerderby reported on April 21st that family friends and advocates started a campaign to craft anti-bullying legislation in her honor. Now, according to the Washington Post, the South Hadley school district “has unveiled a draft anti-bullying policy that details measures that should be taken to prevent, or intervene in, a bad situation.” And – this just in – the Massachusetts Legislature voted today and unanimously passed an anti-bullying law. Representative John Scibak told the Boston Globe, “This is a day that we can be proud we have done something positive – to eradicate bullying and to demonstrate to this commonwealth and to the nation that bullying will no longer be tolerated.” (Scibak’s district includes South Hadley.)
Additionally, the Graduate School of Education at the University of Buffalo this week opened the Jean M. Alberti Center for the Prevention of Bullying Abuse and School Violence. Alberti, a clinical and educational psychologist in Chicago and UB alum, told The Buffalo News, “Bullying abuse is child abuse by children. If we don’t allow abuse by adults, why do we allow it by children?” The Washington Post reports that “about one-third of students aged 12-18 say they are bullied in some fashion.” Continue reading »
