Sixteen companies have agreed to lower the amount of salt in one or more of their products. The group is responding to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s latest health initiative, which notoriously banned trans fats and required nutrition information in city eateries and food stores.

The lower-sodium plan asked food manufacturers and restaurants to set a goal of lowering the sodium in their nationwide offerings by 25 percent over the next five years. Some big players have dealt themselves in — the reduction could be good news for over-salted kids across the country.

Parents with ketchup-loving kids can rejoice. Heinz has said it will cut the amount of sodium in all of its ketchup by 15 percent starting next month. Makers of Uncle Ben’s rice agreed to cut the salt in its flavored rice 25 percent by the five-year deadline.

(Baby-)stepping up to the challenge are companies like Kraft, which agreed to lower the sodium in its bacon and Starbucks, who agreed to work on sodium in all of its non-biscuit foods.

Also in are Au Bon Pain, Goya, Unilever, Subway, Uno Chicago Grill, Red Gold, Boars Head, and others.

Are you buying Bloomberg’s strategy? Are we feeling kumbaya/it takes a village about legislating better health yet?

Are mothers so weak-minded and lazy that they can’t stay up to date on healthy sodium limits for their children of varying ages and weights and then check labels accordingly? Jeesh. (Kidding!)
