Michelle Obama Makes Surprise Visit to Haiti
Michelle Obama and Jill Biden took a helicopter tour of Port-au-Prince today on an unannounced trip to Haiti to reaffirm U.S. commitment to the earthquake-torn country.
Later, the pair will visit the National Palace — where government employees were trapped inside after the earthquake — and visit with President René Préval.
In a statement, the White House said of the visit:
“First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden are visiting Haiti to underscore to the Haitian people and the Haitian government the enduring U.S. commitment to help Haiti recover and rebuild, especially as we enter the rainy and hurricane seasons, and to thank the women and men across the whole of the U.S. government for their extraordinary efforts in Haiti during the past three months. They will also reach out to the U.N. and international relief communities in recognition of the truly global effort underway to help Haiti.”
Children. already at risk in poverty-stricken Haiti, were particularly hard hit by the earthquake that struck, so Obama is likely to also visit with sick and injured children still struggling after the quake. Her visit is a good reminder to Americans that the recovery effort in Haiti will be a long and hard one will require continued giving.
