White House press secretary Robert Gibb’s tweet sums it up nicely. Insurance companies have assured the Obama administration that they will accommodate the new law requiring them to cover children under 19 with preexisting conditions.
The people in charge of our school lunches are having a tough week, as this New York Times story points out. First, Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution (which you should be watching, it’s awesome) tackled an elementary school in Huntington, W.Virginia. His attempts to get the lunch ladies to cook healthy foods, and to get the kids to eat it, were simply heartbreaking if you care about feeding kids well. Continue reading »

UPDATE: School officials say they won’t comment on the story until they meet with an attorney. Jeez, not so much as a “this is regrettable” or “more could have been done.” Teachers watched the abuse Prince received the day she took her life, and yet no mea culpa from the school. The New York Times “Well” blog has uncovered lots of little known provisions in the health care bill, including one that’s going to be outstanding news for working and nursing mothers and their advocates.
According to the blog, employers are now required to provide breaks for nursing mothers to express milk as often as neccessary, and better yet, to provide space for them to do so that isn’t a bathroom. Continue reading »
Jen, age fifteen, was called “Pelican Nose”. Nineteen-year-old Hannah suffered sexual harassment due to her DDD chest. At seventeen, John sported what he described as “Dumbo” ears. All three of these kids had physical issues that made them miserable–and all three got them fixed.
Jennifer Spiegel is suing a Chicago hospital for $30,000 in damages because, one night in 2008, a hospital nurse brought her the wrong day-old infant boy, and she mistakenly nursed him.
Today, Motherlode invites readers to weigh in on the question of nursing someone else’s child: would you?
I can understand Spiegel being distraught at the mix-up, but I have a hard time seeing it as grounds for a lawsuit.
But maybe I’m a little biased. I’m nursing someone else’s baby right now.

That’s actually not all that healthy of you, or good for your kids, according to this Psychology Today blog by Dr. Ellen Weber Libby, a psychologist and author of the book “The Favorite Child.”
