100312 bronson tubes2 hmed 6a.standard Miracle Baby Dies, is Brought Back to Life with Experimental Procedure17-month-old Bronson Staker’s mom, Sara, only turned her back on her son in the tub for a minute. An older brother distracted her. Anyone with more than one kid knows this situation all too well. Yet, in just that moment, Sara turned back to find her child lying face down in the tub. At the hospital, Bronson was pronounced dead on arrival. But doctors tried a “Hail Mary”  last-ditch effort to possibly save the baby by freezing him back to life.

The procedure is called therapeutic hypothermia. In therapeutic hypothermia, doctors gradually cool the body down, usually in patients who suffered cardiac arrest. The process cuts oxygen to the brain, stops the heart and induces a coma. This slows the body’s natural recovery process.

The doctors waited two weeks before slowly warming and reviving the child. If he did come back, there was no way of knowing what cognitive and physical impairments he may have suffered. Doctors advised the Stakers to prepare for a lifetime of medical treatment for their son, under the best scenario.

What they didn’t expect was for Bronson to make a full recovery.

Six weeks after doctors revived him, Bronson shows no signs of impairment. He is a healthy and very lucky boy who cheated death with the help of some unorthodox medical measures.

Absolutely amazing!

Therapeutic hypothermia is not an experimental procedure… actuallyl quite commonly used post cardiac arrest and stroke in most major hospitals.

I think the key thing here for the rest of us is how freaking quickly kids can drown. It’s terrifying.

Agreed, this is one horrifying and, ultimately, amazing story. I followed the mom’s blog as she chronicled the events surrounding her son’s accident and recovery… needless to say, I couldn’t imagine being in her shoes and I’m so happy that he survived virtually unscathed. Oh, and their name is Staker, by the way, not Stoker.

Holy cow! That’s amazing that he was able to recover first of all, but also without any impairments!

This procedure was used on my newborn in December after being in distress and finally having his vitals crash leading to an emergncy c-section. He is now an amazing, bright 10 month old with no brain damage and we owe it all to the hospital, doctors and this procedure!

My CPR training from http://www.emergencyuniversity.com touched on this.

Hypothermia can have amazing results in saving patients and preserving neurological function after a cardiac arrest. Just so you know, the doctors order the procedure but the nurses actually follow set protocols and monitor the patients. The doctors may spend 15 minutes at most per day after the initial evaluation of the patient. Critical care nurses stay with and care for the patients 12 hours at a time, 24 hours a day. Good outcomes come not only from good doctors, but also from amazing nurses! In response to Kim’s comment, I would guess the picture of the child with the feeding tube and respirator was included to show how sick this child WAS not what he is like today. Kids are amazing. If anyone can survive and thrive after such an incident, it is a child!
